Euskal Bizikleta - Stage 5 UPDATED

STAGE 5: ETB (Iurreta) - Arrate (Eibar) – NARRATIVE:

One more time the stage was off to a hectic start, with several skirmishes coming right after the gun. But on the Trabakua descent a breakaway group formed, containing Jon Odriozola (iBanesto.com), Angel Castresana (ONCE), Rui Lavarinhas (Milaneza-MSS), David Etxebarria (Euskaltel), Javier Pascual Llorente (Kel) and Telekom’s Belgian Mario Aerts, Fleche Wallonne winner in 2002. The escapees soon took 40” out of the bunch.

The first to the top of the 3rd-category Areitio climb was Odriozola, followed by David Etxebarria, with the peloton coming in 32” behind. But in the next descent, the gap extended to 01’53”. In the meantime sprinter Miguel Angel Martín Perdiguero (Domina Vacanze-Elitron) and Italian Marco Milesi (Vini Caldirola-Saunier Duval), plus Basque rider Iñaki Isasi (Euskaltel-Euskadi) had abandoned the race.

38.3 km. into the stage, when in the town of Elorrio, the 6-strong break had increased its lead up to 03’15”. In spite of the bad weather, the average speed after one hour of racing was no less than 41.900 km/h.

Odriozola Mugarza, the man who finished all three Grand Tours in 2001 (following in the footsteps of Mariano Piccoli, who did the same thing two years before), won the KOM Prime at Elgeta (Km. 44, Cat. 2) too, with fellow Basque Etxebarria second again, and Mario Aerts taking third. The chasing peloton had slightly brigded the gap to 02’55”.

On the following descent three men broke away from the field: Spaniards Alvaro Gonzalez De Galdeano (ONCE) and Gustavo Otero (Labarca 2–Cafés Baqué) and Poland’s Marek Rutkiewicz (CCC-Polsat). 50 km. into the stage, the situation was as follows: six men in the lead, the above mentioned trio trailing at 02’44”, and the main bunch further 25” behind. Galdeano, Otero and Rutkiewicz stayed clear for a dozen kilomEtres, but were brought back by the km. 57 mark.

Besides the two previous KOM Primes, Odriozola won also the “Meta volante”, in Eibar, with Etxebarria taking second and Castresana third. The peloton was 03’08” down on the leading sextet. Odriozola, Etxebarria snd Castresana were the top 3 riders at the top of the demanding Ixua climb (first category) too, with a 01’20” lead over an all-Spanish chasing bunch featuring Koldo Gil Pérez and Joaquín Rodriguez Oliver (ONCE), Juan Antonio Flecha (iBanesto.com), Txema Del Olmo (Milaneza-MSS) and Gorka Gerrikagoitia (Euskaltel-Euskadi), who rode away from the main peloton on the first slopes of the ascent. Rodríguez got dropped soon, but the other chasers couldn’t gain more than a couple seconds in the 10 following kilometres, while the main bunch was trailing at about 2 minutes behind the break.

David Etxebarria had enough of seeing Odriozola pip him in every KOM prime or Intermediate Sprint, and went on the attack in the third-category Alto de San Miguel. The man in orange was the first to the top, but in the descent Odrizola caught him, and a leading duo formed, with three riders chasing (but not Pascual Llorente who couldn’t stay on their wheels).

But in the 2nd-Category Lizarreta ascent the time came for Rui Lavarinhas to show off his combative attitude. After the man and Aerts caught the leading duo, the Portuguese attacked and quickly opened a significant gap: 39” over Etxebarria, Odriozola and Aerts, 02’09” over the next, 5-strong chasing group and 04’20” over the main peloton. Lavarinhas was the first across the top, with Odriozola second and Aerts in third place.

Just three kilometres after the Lizarreta peaked, the penultimate, decisive ascent began. And in the first-category Alto de Azurki Lavarinhas paid the price for his previous efforts: while Aerts got dropped again, Etxebarria attacked and put some time into the Portuguese. Back in the peloton, time for another “orange warrior” to start the fireworks: Roborto Laiseka made his move and rode away from the peloton including Blue Jersey wearer Pecharromán, quickly taking about half a minute on the Paternina leader. Maybe too little for a man sitting more than two minutes down on GC, but enough to make Pecharromán and his loyal domestique Jorge Ferrio (the thinnest man in the peloton) work a bit.

Etxebarria caught and dropped Lavarinhas and was the first across the top. Odriozola came in second at 30”, while the Portuguese, now in big trouble, was 01’15” behind. Aerts was 15 more seconds down, and Laiseka and three more chasers (Landaluze, Flecha and Txema Del Olmo) came in at 02’00”, namely with a 30-second lead over the Pecharromán-Beloki–Casagrande-Zubeldia group.

On the following descent, Etxebarria put 15 more seconds into Jon Odriozola; the “orange warrior” was clearly going for a solo win in the stage. But as in the meantime Laiseka (whose 4-strong bunch turned a sextet as both Aerts and Lavarinhas were caught) had taken 30 more seconds out of Pecharromán, and was a minute ahead of him in the stage thus halving the gap in the GC, one might start questioning about Euskaltel’s tactics: wouldn’t it be better for Etxebarria to wait for his teammate and help him in his bid for the overall win ? But Gorospe didn’t think so, as in the sextet there was just another men in orange (Landaluze) working for Laiseka.

With about 15k to go, Odriozola had cut the gap down to 30”, while the Landaluze-led peloton featuring Laiseka, was 01’50” down, and only 50” ahead of the Pecharromán group. The Euskaltel targets seemingly were just a stage victory and a top 3 overall spot, as Etxebarría kept pulling hard and the gap to Odriozola got back to 50”, with the Laiseka peloton at 01’58” and the main bunch, where the Paterninas enjoyed some help from the ONCEs (that saw Beloki’s second place overall in jeopardy) at 02’50”.

The Paternina-ONCE alliance worked, and it didn’t take long for them to cut the gap to Laiseka down to 20”. As the final ascent into the line began, Etxebarría was leading Odriozola by 40”, with Laiseka and friends at 01’07”, and the main peloton only 13” behind them. Laiseka was brought back with 7 km to the line.

On the first slopes of the ascent, the gap between Etxebarria and Odriozola was 25”, but the Paternina-led main peloton was gaining time after time, as it was just 50” down on the Euskaltel rider. By km. 142 Odriozola was brought back by the 12-strong bunch, where José Garrido was doing the Lion’s share of the work. Etxebarria was 23” ahead, but his attempt looked doomed. Other men in that bunch were Beloki, Kintana, Piepoli and Casagrande. And with just 5 km. to go, the gap was down to 18”.

With 4 km. left, and Pecharromán flying towards the overell win, the gap was 15”, with Etxebaria struggling to save his lead. But when Aitor Kintana attacked , Zubeldia followed and so did Casagrande (not willing to lose his podium spot) and Pecharroman, it was ver for Exebarria. The Euskaltel rider was caught, but pulled hard for about 200 more metres (probably to help teammate Haimar Zubeldia), such that more riders got dropped, and when even “Etxe” ran out of energies, there was just 4 left in the lead with 2.5k to go; Pecharromán, Casagrande, Beloki and Zubeldia.

Pecharromán sealed his triumphal race by winning the last KOM prime too, with Zubeldia (trying to steal the third place overall to Casagrande, currently only 1” behind him) snatching second place ahead of the Italian and Beloki. With no more doubts concerning the overall winner, the stage victory turned into a matter of four.

With 300 metres to go, Beloki made his winning move and his rivals couldn’t do anything to stop him. Joseba took line honors (just the way he did 12 months ago), while Zubeldia was runner-up in the stage, but couldn’t take the second he needed out of Casagrande, such that in the end the Lampre’s Italian saved his podium spot. Pecharromán was overall winner of the race ahead of Beloki and Casagrande.
