The start at Trenton
Trenton, New Jersey, June 6, 2003 - The Wachovia Cycling Series continued today in Trenton, NJ, under grey, but fortunately, not rainy skies.
Another 91 miles in 13 laps of a 7 mile circuit, just like in Lancaster, but if Lancaster is a race for the hard, Trenton is a race for the fast. Traditionally resulting in a bunch sprint, with speeds averaging upwards of 30mph, Trenton is one of the fastest races on the US circuit.
True to form, the race stayed together for most of the day, despite aggressive riding from all the usual suspects, and several attampts to get a move going. With four laps to go, Navigators' Marty Nothstien broke out some powerful riding and got a gap, which became a break of six or seven, including Saturn's Chris Horner, Formaggi Pinzolo's Massimiliano Mori, Prime Alliance's David Clinger, US Postal's Benoit Joachim, and Webcor's Steve Larsen.
Ofoto/Lombardi Sports' Russell Hamby, followed by a swallowing army of CSC riders lead the chase through the start/finish, and it wasn't long before the full CSC team took the lead en masse, with Andrea Tafi leading the chase, with the field strung out behind them, and the break was doomed.
Saturn's Chris Horner and Prime Alliance's David Clinger weren't giving up without a fight, though, and took another shot at breakaway glory, but CSC and Saturn on the front of the field, rocking a pace of over 35mph, insured a bunch gallop.
In the end, it was CSC's New Zealander, Julian Dean took top honors in a drag race against Russian National RR Champion, Navigator Oleg Grischkine, with Saturn's Belorussian rocket, Viktor Rapinski rounding out the podium.
Dean was delighted with his win. "I've won Trenton the last two times I've been here so maybe it is the perfect race for me," said Dean. "It has been a very rewarding week so far for CSC and we really want to show America what a great team we are."
The podium boys.
Sprint winner: Mroz's Kazimierz Stafiej
