Paris Roubaix - the favorites

100th Paris-Roubaix - CDM

France, April 14, 2002 ·

At the tour of Flanders last season written on the road by a fan was the stark message to the newly founded Domo team - “ Lotto tops - Domo Flops “ . Indeed the season had not been going to well for the Belgium outfit . However the following weekend a truly astonishing performance which saw them win the top three places in the Paris Roubaix with 5 team members in the top twenty saved the season for the team .Indeed the team will start tomorrow as favourites for the race - however the excellent Wilfred Peters has retired and Romans Vainsteins is still on the sick list - but Fred Rodriguez has been showing excellent form as has Cassani - so the Domo team will enter the race full of confidence for another big day out . · · ·

Domo: ·

1. Knaven (Ned), 2. Cassani (Ita), 3. Cretskens (Bel), 4. Koerts (Ned), 5. Milesi (Ita), 6. Museeuw (Bel), 7. Rodriguez ( USA), 8. Van Heeswijk (Ned)

For a team that had dominated the race for so long , last season was a complete disaster for the Italian outfit Mapei . Not a single rider in the top twenty and to make matters worse their ex-riders enjoying a day of glory for the Domo team . However the team have re-grouped and with Tafi and Nardello showing everyone else how a classic race should be ridden in last weeks Tour of Flanders the teams confidence will be sky high . Tom Steels is sadly lacking the confidence to ride , but his replacement De Waele is showing excellent form -as is Zanini and Hunter - the prospect of a Mapei /Domo showdown is eagerly anticipated , ·

Mapei: ·

11 Tafi (Ita), 12. Bodrogi (Hun), 13. De Waele (Bel), 14. Fornaciari (Ita), 15. Horillo (Esp), 16. Hunter (AfS), 17. Nardello (Ita), 18. Zanini (Ita) ·

US Postal fans will probably be unaware exactly how well and how organised the team has ridden so far this season. Hincapie will be looking to make the breakthrough for his first major victory - while Tom Boonen has achieved a string of remarkable results for a neo-pro - Cruz has also looked good - a piece of pave could be heading stateside for the first time . ·

USPostal: ·

101. Hincapie ( USA), 102. Boonen (Bel), 103. Clinger ( USA), 104. Cruz ( USA), 105. Kjaergaard (Nor), 106. Landis (USA), 107. Padrnos (Tch), 108. White (Aus) ·

The famous pink and blue shirts of the Lampre team have so far achieved little this season - nevertheless everyones favourite former spray painter , Ludo Dierckxsens , is a man on a mission and with Sciandri , Serpellini and Belohvosciks in support it would be foolish to write off the chances of one of racings best loved characters. It will also be very interesting to see how neo-pro Loddo performs - say in comparison to Boonen . · ·

Lampre: ·

21. Dierckxsens (Bel), 22. Bertogliati (Sui), 23. Loddo (Ita), 24. Pagliarini (Bré), 25. Sciandri (GBR), 26. Serpellini (Ita), 27. Raivis Belohvosciks (Lat), 28. Milan Kadlec (Czh) ·

One of the more memorable images of last years dramatic mud bath was that of Wesemann of the Telekom team struggling to keep up with the leaders while his right foot constantly slipped off its pedal . Unlikely to suffer the bad luck of a mechanical two years running - and with the weather more likely to make it a dust bowl the Telekom team is highly motivated. The conditions are more likely to suit Eric Zabel this year and the team are giving equal billing to Wesemann, Zabel and Klier .A German won the very first Paris Roubaix - the Telekom lads are determined that the winner of the one hundred edition will be also be German . ·

Telekom: 141. Zabel (All), 142. Aldag (All), 143. Grabsch (All), 144. Hondo (All), 145. Hundertmarck (All), 146. Klier (All), 147. Schreck (All), 148. Wesemann (All) ·

The final showdown between Tchmil and Museeuw sadly ended on the descent of the Kemmelberg when Tchmil’s spring campaign came to an abrupt end .Indeed the Lotto team have been plagued by injuries with Eeckhout being the latest victim - it is a sign of the strength of the squad that in form Van Petegem still has a very strong looking team to back him .Gardeyn , Vierhouten and De Cercq are all on top form - and having returned from a broken arm neo-pro Kevin Van Impe is another interesting young prospect to keep an eye open for . · ·

Lotto: 31. Van Petegem (Bel), 32. D'Hollander (Bel), 33. H. De Clercq (Bel), 34.Kevin Van Impe(Bel), 35. Gardeyn (Bel), 36. Marichal (Bel), 37. S. Van Dijck (Bel), 38. Vierhouten (PBS) ·

Cofidis finished with two riders in the top twenty last year - and would have probably done even better but for the injury to Phillipe Gaumont .Indeed this years luck has been no better for the French outfit with Chris Peers being the latest rider to pull out through injury . Mattan and Planckaert may yet pull off a surprise . ·

Cofidis: ·

61. Planckaert (Bel), 62. Flammang (lux), 63. Hayles (GBR), 64. Lamour (Fra), 65. Mattan (Bel), 66.Clain (Bel), 67. Tessier (Fra), 68. Tombac (Est) ·

in 1997 Frederic Guesdon (Fra) won the sprint finish to win the race - and he had already won the junior version - this year his Française de la Jeux: team seem to be in excellent shape and the dry conditions will suit their style - Pencole ,Durand,Casper and Nazon are all capable of helping Guesdon re-launch his career. ·

121. Guesdon (Fra), 122. Casper (Fra), 123. Durand (Fra), 124. Mengin (Fra), 125. J.-p. Nazon (Fra), 126. Pencolé (Fra), 127. Perque (Fra), 128. Wilson (Aut) ·

The Fassa team have been in tremendous form this season - and yet strangely have done nothing in the Classics so far - Ivanov and Baldato - never good in the mud might make an impression if the weather stays fine . ·

Fassa Bortolo: ·

131. Baldato (Ita), 132. ??? 133. S. Ivanov (Rus), 134. Konyshev (Rus), 135. Loda (Ita), 136. Petito (Ita), 137. Zanette (Ita), 138. ??? ·

Winner of the Tour of Flanders last year and fifteenth in Paris Roubaix Bortolami will be looking to kick start his season - and indeed should do better than in last weeks RVV when Balducci’s early exit finished off the teams chances before the race had really begun . ·

Tacconi: ·

51. Bortolami (Ita), 52. Balducci (Ita), 53. Bossoni (Ita), 54. Ferrari (Ita), 55. Gerosa (Ita), 56. Hauptman (Slo), 57. Minali (Ita), 58. Radaelli (Ita) ·

The Rabobank team is another squad to have been ravaged by injury but Wauters (Bel) should never be written off , Hoj (Dan), may continue team Coasts revival - and Arvis Piziks (Lat) CSC may well finish in the top twenty again . AG2R: have the entertaining Agnolutto , while Kasputis and Capelle could surprise. ·

Crédit Agricole will be hoping the excellent Voigt ,Brard and Hushovd can give the local fans something to shout about . ·

So all in all 25 teams of 8 riders will tackle the course and twenty six sections of pave - just to remind us of when the pave occurs and it’s difficulty (cotation 1 = easiest cotation 5 = most difficult} ·
