86th Giro d'Italia Stage 4

Today the riders face a 170km jaunt from Aquappesa Marina to Vibo Valentia. The race is pan flat for the first 120km; then the riders must tackle the 16km climb of the Cresta di Zungri. That is followed by a flat section of 4km and a 10km descent. Then there is another uncategorized, 13km climb.

The stage ends with a 7km downhill roll into Vibo Valentia. There should be enough climbing to once again thwart Cipollini's chase of Binda's record, as the climbs should once again see lots of attacks.

Rik Verbrugghe (Lotto-Domo) has abandoned the Giro after his fall towards the end of yesterday's stage. A sad day for the Belgians!

The climbs aren't that steep, so this race could go in any direction. It should see an exciting finish.

There is a breakaway of four riders. Panaria is leading the chase in the peloton at 2' 35" back.

The breakaway includes Julian Martinez (Kelme) and Ellio Aggiano (Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave). The four riders are working well together on a clear and beautiful day.

6:39 am PDT - 58 km left. Martin Hvastija (Tenax) is also in this group that escaped at the 1km point. The sprinters' teams have taken up the chase in earnest, so the gap has now fallen down to 1' 10". So the sprinters seem to think this is a day for them. We'll see.

Stefano Garzelli (Caldirola-Sidermec) looks happy today. He looked even happier yesterday winning the stage. Francisco "The Scarecrow" Casagrande (Lampre) has a puncture, and his teammates pace him quickly back to the peloton. The Scarecrow hasn't tried to punch anyone yet this year, but the race is still young....

So the break is caught, and now two new riders attack. Stefan Weigold (Gerolsteiner) and Luca di Angeli (Columbia-Selle Italia) are the riders attacking on the early parts of the climb. Again, it's not that steep and the peloton is not under pressure.

Constantino Gutierrez (Kelme) also has a go, and is joined by a clump of others. They're not that organized, but they've caught the two leaders. The big guns seem disinterested, and the peloton seems to be sort of strolling up the climb.

Mario "SuperFabio" Cipollini looks smashing in his World Champion's ensemble today, having lost the Intergiro jersey yesterday. Cipo is likely glad to be rid of the ugly thing, which is not color coordinated with his shorts like the World Champion's jersey.

Cipo rides near the front, and doesn't look in any difficulty. So perhaps this will be his day. For his part, "Rabid" Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo) will likely be foaming at the mouth today trying to get the win he felt was stolen from him on Stage 2.

6:52 am PDT. 42 km left.Pietr Chmielewski (CCC-Polstat) is now in the lead with 8km left until the summit of this categorized climb.

Now he is passed by a Kelme rider, who is joined by Fredy Gonzalez (Selle Italia) in pursuit of King of the Mountain points.

The trio is now settled into a rhythm on a relatively flat section of the climb. Two more riders are latched on to the group now, with the peloton closing down quickly.

6:56 am PDT, 40km left. The group of five winds its way up the 3rd category Cresta di Zungri, which has an average 4% gradient. The leaders are all mountain smurfs, many looking for points in the KOM jersey. It's unlikely they'll be able to hold off the peloton all the way to the finish. Some riders are now being tailed off on the steeper part of the climb.

Cipo is now grousing at the cameras off the back of the peloton. His sleeves are rolled up and the sweat is pouring. He's being paced by a couple of teammates, but things don't look good for the fabulous one.

Cipo is just hanging a few meters from the back of the peloton. He's fighting, and might be able to recover on the downhill. There is a group of about a dozen riders off the front now.

7:02 PDT. Carlos Garcia Quesada (Kelme) has a bit of a gap and is riding solo at the front of the race. He is nearing the top of the climb.

Sandy Casar (FDJeux.com) leads the chase group of about eight men in pursuit of Garcia Quesada. Casar now gets a gap and the remaining chasers string out trying to regain his wheel.

7:06 PDT. 36km left. The riders enter the town of Zungri. Garcia Quesada is still in the lead.

Casar has now caught Garcia Quesada. But now Casar gets dropped again! The Kelme rider wants no part of the Frenchman.

Petacchi is in the peloton, which is chasing the leaders. He's still happy with his 17" lead in the overall. Cipollini still struggles just off the back of the peloton.

7:12 PDT. 34km left. Carlos Garcia Quesada wins the maximum KOM points, and he is quickly followed by a small group of chasers. They will likely all come together now on the descent and try to hold off the peloton. Cipo is about 40" behind the peloton. It may be close enough for him to reintegrate with the field on the descent.

Garcia Quesada is bridged by a few riders. They are on the flat, 4km long section before the descent starts. Cipollini is yelling at some of the other riders in his group chasing the peloton, wanting them to help with the chase.

7:24 am PDT. 25 km left. Cipollini has reintegrated with the peloton!! There is another slight incline before the finish, but he has made it through the hard part. But how much gas has it taken from his tank?

There are six riders off the front. The group includes Garcia Quesada. McEwen has a mechanical!! His teammate quickly gives him a new wheel and pushes him off. He should regain the peloton quickly.

Scarponi (Domina Vacanze-Elitron) is in the lead group of six. Will he work with the group, or is he just marking it? Fabio Sacchi (Saeco) launches an attack from the peloton and gets a good gap. He's now in pursuit of the six leaders.

7:32 PDT. 18km left. Sacchi is about to be caught by the peloton. The lead of the six leaders is falling. But there are lots of counterattacks now, and the peloton doesn't look that organized.

Marcel Strauss (Gerolsteiner) drives the breakaway of six riders. Oscar Pozzi (Tenax) now has a gap on the peloton on an uphill incline.

Pozzi's gap is gone now. One of Cipo's wild zebra-men leads the peloton on the charge. Carlos Dacruz (FDJeux.com) and Fortunato Balliani (Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave) are in the lead group of six. Volodymyr Bileka (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) is another member of the lead group.

Two of the wild zebra-men are on the front leading the chase in the peloton. The lead of the six breakaways is back up to 30" on the uphill incline. Ignacio Gutierrez (Kelme) drives the lead group of six. There are two Kelmes in that group.

Marco Pantani (Mercatone Uno), the Papa of the mountain smurfs, looks good and relaxed in the peloton. Could he actually have found some old form? We'll see in the mountains.

7:44 PDT. 10km left. Now Fassa Bortolo has come to the front en masse to help with the chase. The peloton is all strung out, and the hammer is finally and seriously down.

Now on another incline, Freddy Gonzalez (Selle Italia) and a Panaria rider attack from the peloton. Furlan, the Alessio sprinter, has popped and lost contact with the peloton. The Fassa boys are still setting the pace, and look to be doing some damage. Cipo has slipped down to the back of the peloton, but is holding on.

8:00 PDT. 5km left. Cipollini is 25" behind the peloton. Frigo (Fassa Bortolo) is leading the peloton setting the tempo. They must have seen Cipo in difficulty, and put Frigo on the front to finish him off. They are protecting the Pink Jersey well, and look to be setting up Petacchi for another sprint finish. Cipollini still hasn't given up, and is chasing hard with teammates leading the way.

The lead group must have been swept up, as two Lottos and two Kelmes lead the peloton (behind Frigo, that is). There are 3km left to go. The Kelme boys are setting up Isaac Galvez Lopez. McEwen is there at the front as well.

Here comes the sprint finish. Fassa is doing the leadout. The sprint is chaotic! No organization...

McEwen wins it! He just takes Petacchi by a tire!!

First is McEwen, second is Petacchi, and Bernhard Eisel (FDJeux.com) takes third. Wow, that's a great finish for Eisel, a relative unknown.

Petacchi had a clear shot at the line, and led the way right down the middle. McEwen came off his wheel and came around on the left, just jumping enough in the last few meters to nip Petacchi by a few inches. Of all people, "Papa Smurf" Pantani came in 9th in the sprint!

Eisel has some good results this year. He won stage 2 of GP Erik Breukink and stage 5 of Liguria, was 12th in Milan-San Remo, 14th in the Ronde von Vlanderen, and 22nd in Paris Roubaix. This is surely a nice addition to an already strong season.
