Tour de Georgia Stage 5 - Clinger wins it, Horner Crowned

Atlanta, Georgia, April 26, 2003 - Beautiful weather greeted the peloton on the last stage of the Tour de Georgia, as the racers took to 88 miles on a challenging circuit in downtown Atlanta, and the race kicked off under sunny skies and surrounded by a festival atmosphere in Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park.

Saturn's Chris Horner began the day in the lead, and was poised to take the overall as long as he showed up on the startline in his racing kit; but the big story of the day was the potential duel between Vini-Caldirola/Sidermec's Freddy Rodriguez who began the day only 18" down, and Horner, who wore the Dodge Tour de Georgia leader's jersey after 5 days of racing. Fast Freddy, who won the two stages leading into today's race, was within mathematical striking distance of the GC victory if he could take all the sprint points, and win the stage.

On the first lap, Rodriguez's Vini-Caldirola/Sidermec team announced their intentions, leading the peloton through the start/finish line, and sure enough, Rodriguez did take the first two bonus sprints, Unfortunately for him, Horner had some math skills, and knew that if he took any points at all in the sprinters' race, he would close out Freddy's chances, and he place third behind Schroeder Iron's Miguel Meza on the first sprint, sealing his overall victory provided he finished today.

After that, Schroeder Iron's Jacob Erker and Pete Knudsen were the animating forces in a break that got away in the 4th lap, along with Ofoto's Tim Larkin, Adham Sbeih of Sierra Nevada, Steve Larson of Webcor, and Rabobank's Marten Den Bakker. Their gap hovered around the one-minute mark, with all 6 men driving it, and they took the final sprint points on the day.

With no one in that break threatening Horner's GC victory, Saturn was happy to let it roll, but Prime Alliance had other plans. The uphill slog to the finish was a perfect course for David Clinger in the sprint, and Prime Alliance led a chase that caught the escapees on the last lap. Coming into the line, it was Alex Candelario leading Clinger to victory, but Fred Rodriguez, who barely missed the victory by millimeters, hotly contested the finish. On the line, Clinger wasn't sure he'd won "I just stomped on it as hard as I could," he said. "I knew Freddy was coming, but luckily, the line came before he did."

In the end, it was Clinger, Rodriguez and Formaggi Pinzolo's Moreno DiBiase on the stage. Fast Freddy's efforts were enough to bring him into second place in the GC, and Horner's teammate Nathan O'Neill rounded out the podium in third place overall. Ofoto's Georgia native Saul Raisin, who has enjoyed a week in the spotlight, finished in the best young rider's jersey. Fred Rodriguez took the sprinter's laurels; Chris Horner was King of the Mountains, and the bike race.
