Tour de Georgia Prologue - O'Neill Powers to Victory

Schroeder Iron Press Release

Savannah, Georgia, April 22, 2003 - The Tour de Georgia kicked off today with a technical 2.6 mile time trial course in downtown Savannah. Tailor-made for an experienced tough guy, it was no surprise that Saturn's Nathan O'Neill powered to the only time under 5 minutes, setting the bar at 4.58. O'Neill's teammate Chris Horner was second at 5:02, and 7-Up-Maxxis had a great showing with Greg Henderson only fractions of a second down on Horner, and John Lieswyn putting in a strongman's ride to take 4th, only 6 seconds off the winning time.

Henderson's time was especially impressive considering the fact that he punctured with 4 or 5 corners to go, and finished the time trial on the rim. Henderson's teammate John Lieswyn had high praise for the kiwi, saying that he is a formidable candidate to do well this year and that the team was lucky to have him. Also posting good times were Navigators Chris Baldwin and Henk Vogels.

In the tough day department, Prime Alliance started off the tour with some bad luck. Svein Tuft lost 10 seconds to a late arrival in the gate, and Jonathan Vaughters crashed in the second corner on the course, losing over a minute to O'Neill. Former U23 World Time Trial Champion Danny Pate posted their best time, ten seconds down on the leader, and strong in 8th place.

It was a good day for the American teams; Fast Freddy Rodriguez, who arrived in town only yesterday after riding Amstel Gold on Sunday put up the best time for a rider on a European team, landing in 28th place, 16 seconds down.

Schroeder Iron had a solid day, with all 8 riders coming within 26 seconds of the top time, and three in the top 20. Says team director Frankie Andreu, "I think the team did great. Aaron and Jake did great, probably even better than they expected, and the rest of the guys rode super strong. We had no problems, no crashes… it was a good start. Tomorrow, we'll have two or three guys protected for the General Classification, taking it easy. The stages are long, so you've got to be careful with how much effort you put out early on."

Tonight the peloton transfers to Augusta, and heads out on the road tomorrow starting in Augusta and finishing in Macon. The 136 mile rolling stage features three sprint points and ends in three finishing circuits including a tough uphill on Coleman Hill, with KOM points on each lap.
