Valley of the Sun Stage Race, Stage 2 RR

Schroeder Iron Press Release by Jaime Nichols

February 15, 2003 - Tempe, AZ - The Valley of the Sun Stage Race continued today in Tempe, Arizona with a road race under sunny skies and fair temperatures. With the overall wide open after yesterday's time trial, Sandy Perrins and Genvieve Jeanson began the day in the leaders' jerseys. By the end, Jeanson held her lead, while Schroeder Iron's Aaron Olson, whose strong ride to place second in yesterday's time trial put him in a position to strike, taking the overall lead for the men.

Sandy Perrins began the road race in the Leader's Jersey, but had a challenge on his hands with Schroeder's Olson and Peter Mazur only six seconds behind, and Saturn the team to beat, with three out of four riders sitting in the top ten. Going into today's stage, Schroeder had a close eye on Saturn's strong sprinter, Ivan Dominguez, and the plan was to keep tabs on the Cuban rocket and try for the time bonuses. Olson stayed close to Dominguez, but didn't have the sprint to come around him in at the first KOM. Dominguez took a 15 second bonus, and Olson, fourth in the sprint came up empty handed.

Knowing now that simply coming to the line together wouldn't be enough to take the lead against Saturn, the Schroeder Ironmen had to attack and try for an escape. Schroeder's Adam Livingston, along with Frank Pipp and John Puffer, both of ABD Cycling Club, managed to go away in a break that ate up most of the remaining time bonuses, but they were caught with a lap and a half to go, and the attacks started afresh.

Saturn's Mark McCormack and Will Frischkorn covered for Dominguez keeping him fresh for the final sprint, while Olson and Schroeder looked for an escape. Finally, a group of seven got away, with McCormack, Olson, Oliver Stilercote, Scott Price (Landis/Trek/VW), Nate Faulkner (KB Home), Andy Crater (Lemond) and James Van Toever (James Moriati & Honeywell) with only 10 kilometers to go.  McCormack sat on, looking to slow it down for Dominguez, and Stilercote did not work, but the remaining five had the strength to keep the pack at bay and steadily opened a gap.

Seeing that Dominguez was not going to make it, McCormack took matters into his own hands at the bottom of the last hill and attacked hard. The riders behind quickly organized to chase, but McCormack held on just barely for a 6 second victory on his breakaway companions. Olson was second, picking up a 15 second bonus that leaves him with a 40 second lead over McCormack, and 42 seconds over Dominguez going into tomorrow's criterium in downtown Phoenix.

"Everyone rode really strong today," said Olson of his teammates. Heading into the final stage with a nice cushion, Olson says, "We're really riding well together. I feel good, and the guys are riding good." Schroeder's Jason Bausch, Pete Knudsen, Adam Livingston, Jacob Erker and Miguel and Rigo Meza finished with the front group 41 seconds behind McCormack.

In the Valley of the Sun Stage Race, there's only one leader's jersey, so the man who loses it in one stage has to wash it and hand it over to the wearer for the next.

"A dirty jersey!" says Olson, "That's keeping it real!"

In the women's race, team Rona was committed to defending Genvieve Jeanson's lead and rode a strong race neutralizing all attacks. In the end, it was a sprint finish kept together by some strong riding by Team Rona. Saturn's Jessica Phillips managed to animate the field with a late attack, but all was quickly brought back in line by Rona. Jeanson took the sprint, with Sue Palmer Komar (Genesis Scuba) in second and Lynn Gaggioli rounding out the podium.

Jeanson maintains her race lead going into tomorrow's criterium.
