|7 riders crashed just after the descent of the Kemmelberg today. Main victims were Andrei Tchmil and Chris Peers. Tchmil probably broke his tigh bone and his career is most likely over. Peers had to be taken to hospital for a few bruses and is also unsure about the Tour of Flanders.
This is really horrible news from the Belgian front. Tchmil was one of the favourites for the Ronde and as I was writing a preview for it, I noticed how good he looked for it. Let's wish him all the best!
The injuries of Andrei Tchmil don't seem to be as bad as they thought at first, according to the Belgian cyclingsite, Sport24. A medic from the hospital in Blontrock (Ieper) could confirm that Tchmil 'only' had two broken fingers, one on each hand, and a muscle-injury on his tigh.
The first medical bulletin that the Lotto-Adecco-rider would have broken his tigh bone was denied by the hospital. tchmil himself wants to restart in Amstel Gold Race.
According to his director sportif Walter Planckaert, Tchmil asked to resume racing in Amstel, after having heard how 'bad' his injuries were. "Knowing Tchmil he is serious. Besides, he wants to finish off his career in beauty, since he will end it after the Tour of Belgium."
