| Risi and Betschart won one of the chases of the day and got back to the top spot at the end of Saturday's session. The "Alpen-express" has now a 16-point lead over Italy's Villa and Martinello (the latter taking part in the LAST race of his extraordinary career). But the competition is just at halfway point, and the battle between the Swiss and
Italian veterans goes on, always in front of a huge (yesterday there was a great level of attendance, ranging up to more than 13,000 spectators) and enthusiastic crowd.
But you'd better not write off two or three more pairs, to start from Scott McGrory and Matt Gilmore. The Aussie-Belgian team gained one lap on all other main contenders and moved up to third, throwing local idols Kappes and Beikirch out of the podium places. But the Germans still are serious overall contenders, and so are Dutch specialists Slippens and Stam, winners of Saturday's 30-minute madison and just one point away from achieving the 100-points score needed to gain a bonus lap.
Chris Newton and Adriano Baffi doubled their score, but didn't manage to improve their overall position, as they are still sitting in place number eight, three laps down to the leaders. As for Marty Nothstein and Jean Pierre van Zyl, the South African-American team lost three laps and one place on Saturday, and dropped to 11th overall.
As for "minor" contests, Jens Fiedler is still leading the Sprinters race, ahead of two fellow Germans, with Britain's Craig McLean tied with Latvian Ainars Kiksis at the bottom of the table. No changes in the Stayer Championship, with Podlesch, Jörg and Klare in the same places as the night before.
