The ultimate night of the 39th "Bremer Sechstagerennen", featured by an attendance of 10,200, had an extremely surprising final. Thanks to a great performance in the last chsae, overall winners of the competition were Holland's Robert Slippens and Danny Stam, a duo not part of the "exclusive" bunch of favourites at the start of the race.
But the flying Dutchmen were stronger than any speculations from cycling pundits, and finished the race with a score of 422, 14 points clear of crowd favourites Andreas Kappes and Andreas Beikirch, thus giving their country the first win in Bremen's Stadthalle since 1993 but, more important, getting their own first victory in such kind of events. Kudos to 27-year-old Slippens and 30-year-old Stam.
As for Scott MCGrory and Matthew Gilmore, the Aussie-Belgian duo managed to climb the podium, but in third place only.
American Marty Nothstein and Austrian team-mate Franz Stocher pulled out of competition in the final night. As for last year's winners, Bruno Risi and Kurt Betschart finished in fifth place, behind Italian veterans Silvio Martinello (taking part in the "Bremen Six" for the last time) and Marco Villa.
