They got it last ! It took four days, but finally Scott McGrory and Matt Gilmore captured the overall leadership of the "Bremer Sechstagerennen" on Sunday afternoon's session. The battle remains tight anyway, extremely tight, as the Aussie-Belgian duo is now leading by two points only over Kappes and Beikirch. On the same lap is another top-class pair, e.g. the "Alpen-Express": after a bad start, the recordmen for six-day wins gained places each day and are now sitting on a (provisional) podium place, whereas former leaders Slippens and Stam, as well as italian veterans Martinello and Villa, remain one lap behind them all.
America's Marty Nothstein and Austrian partner Franz Stocher gained two laps and one place on Sunday, but are still far from the top. The good news was that both riders involved in Saturday's crash, Adriano Baffi and Andreas Müller, were back on track, and their "original" pairs formed again. So the italian found back South Africa's Jean Pierre Van Zyl as team-mate. The duo is currently ranked eighth overall.
As for the Under 23 competition, Belgian riders Iljo Keisse and Johan van den Abele kept the overall lead even after Sunday's session, although also in this contest the gap between the pair sitting at the top of the ranking and their closest challengers (Germany's Christoph Meschenmoser and Stefan Löffler) is no more than two points. Expect a very close battle in both races in the two final days of the "Bremen Six".
