2nd - Criterium of Ouagadougou (Upper Volta - Now Burkina Faso). His last ride on December 15, 1959.
In the years 1943 and 1944 Fausto Coppi was a corporal of Italian Army on the African front (Tunisia). Captured by British troops, he was held captive in Tunisia and Algeria, before being freed in 1945. He was definitely luckier than many other Italian (and German, British, American, French, Soviet and of several other nationalities) soldiers, as he could get back home, and continue his successful career, but nonetheless what we might call the “World War break” undoubtedly affected his palmares, preventing the “Campionissimo” to add some more lines.
This is the end of the special tribute the “Daily Peloton” paid to one of the best riders in the history of cycling, on the occasion of the 43th anniversay of his death. Hope you enjoyed it. And hope that one day, if you should happen to be on the roads of Fausto Coppi’s area (near the town of Castellanía, province of Alessandria, Piedmont region of North-Western Italy, a nice hamlet in the countryside, surrounded by magnificent landscapes) you might want to pay a visit to the places that still honour the memory of the greatest “Campionissimo”.
