Alessio 2003

“With Pellizotti and Caucchioli we can have real Giro ambitions” says Alessio manager Bruno Cenghialta, "and Moreni can win a quality Classic one day race”.

Talking to the Gazzetta dello Sport today the Alessio manager Bruno Cenghialta has ambitious but realistic plans for the 2003 season.

Team manager for the last two seasons Cenghialta is happy with how his team has progressed - "we have made good progress over the last two years. It is true that in 2001 we had 36 victories and the past year “only” achieved 24, but the quality of the successes and overall placings has improved: it is true, as an example, than in the Giro did not win stages as we did in 2001 (two, both with Caucchioli), but the third position of Caucchioli in the General classification is worth more. In the same way the victories of Pellizzotti in the Tirreno-Adriatico and Vuelta Pais. It means that we have a rider of great potential, gaining confidence as the seasons pass."

To Cenghialta his two young riders are essential to his teams major target for the season - the Giro d’Italia 2003 -

"These two young men are the jewels in our crown and in the Giro, which remains our most important race of the season, they will enjoy equal privileges and importance. My main aim for the team in 2003 is to help these riders develop until both are in a position to fight for the General Classification of the race. I am not talking about the maglia rosa, but it is clear that these two riders should not be thinking in terms of stage wins but should be concentrating on a prestige placing in the General Classification.

In the Giro, many important names of recent years have been eliminated from the competition for reasons outside the sport, you can never predict what will happen in life: with a little fortune we could achieve more than we hope for. If Casagrande, who is now over thirty, thinks he can still win the Giro, than we have every reason to believe that with Pellizotti, who is 24, and Caucchioli who is 27, that in the near future we will have the maglia rosa as our main target."

The team, naturally, has other arrows for its bow - "I have high hopes and expectations for Christian Moreni, for example. He has the right qualities, both technically and athletically to be able to win an important Classic. And with two veterans like Baldato and Dufaux you not only hope for a victory but above all they will pass on their experience and wisdom to the younger team members."
