| Great start for Marco Villa (33) and Adriano Baffi (aged 40). After the first night of competition the two italian veterans are leading by a five-point margin over defending champions Alexander Aeschbach and Franco Marvulli (both form Switzerland). Local idols Jean Michel Tessier and Robert Sassone are in third place, one lap down.
But things got even worse for another French pair: recently crowned World Champions Franck Perque and Jérôme Neuville lost four laps and are currently trailing in spot number seven. Good start for 25-year-old Aussie Luke Roberts who (along with Belgian mate Steven De Neef) won the points competition and is now just outside the podium places in the GC, and the South-African duo J.P. van Zijl-Robert Hunter.
Magnificent start for another Australian, World Champion Sean Eadie, who won the sprinters contest on the first evening in the "Palais des Sports", ahead of no less than French sensations Florien Rousseau and Arnaud Tournant.
Fellow countryman Jobie Dajka took seventh. Rousseau is runner-up in the Keirin contest too, just behind Tournant. Dajka is fourth, Eadie seventh-placed. Below is the GC after night one.
