TOUR DE FRANCE 2003 - THE ROUTE

The Tour de France will celebrate its 100th edition with an unusual departure in the city usually hosting its last stage only: Paris. The last time France's main city hosted the tdF departure it was 1963. Forty years later, riders will be back for the opening ITT whose finishing line will be located in the "Stade de France" Stadium.

The following day, riders will take the start in front of the "Réveil-matin" café in the town of Montgeron, the historical site where the first TdF stage got underway on the first day of July, 1903.

The 2003 Tour de France will also hit the cities of Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Nantes, all of them already part of the first editon of the contest, and glad to have the TdF on their streets again 100 years later.

Most, if not all all of the TdF "legendary" climbs are included in the 2003 Route, from Tourmalet to Izoard, from Galibier to Peyeresourd to the famed Alpe d'Huez. In spite of just three mountain top finishes, the route looks challenging. More details on the 2003 TdF climbs available below.

Whilst talking to the press, TdF boss Jean-Marie Leblanc spent a few words about the four-time winner who will be going for a fifth consecutive victory in the next edition of the race: "I don't think Lance Armstrong should worry too much about the route. He'll have enough chances to prove his superiorty, assuming he's even better than last year."

The complete route of the 2003 Grand Boucle was unveiled today in Paris' Palais des Congrès. The 20 stages (plus the usual prologue) of the World's #1 race, going from Saturday, July 5th, to Sunday, July 27th 2003, are as follows:
