Terpestra turns long attack into victory at the RVV.
Weeks of speculation accompanied the run-up to the 102nd Tour of Flanders, but few were factoring in Niki Terpestra as the eventual winner after 264.7 km of racing.
The foreshortening of the view along the finishing straight didn't nearly do justice to Niki Terpestra's superb win in Oudenaarde but the time gaps more than made up for it with the Belgian holding off Mads Pedersen by 12 seconds with teammate Philippe Gilbert at 17". Michael Valgren Astana Pro Team was the last man riding solo before Greg Van Avermaet led home a group of chasers thatcontained pre-race favourites Peter Sagan and Sep Vanmarcke. the latter crashed twice during the race fighting each time to get back to the chase.
Some 70 of the 175 starters failed ot finsih with an unforntuante Luke Rowe (Sky) disqualified for taking to a cycle path to avoid a crash.
