January 2013

Chris Froome is heading back to Oman aiming to repeat his feat of 2013. Froome will come up against all his predecessors in the race's honour roll (Fabian Cancellara, Robert Gesink and Peter Velits), as well as Joaquim Rodríguez, who escorted him on the Tour podium in July. The maglia rosa of last year's Giro d'Italia, Vincenzo Nibali, will also be there as he shifts his focus to the Grande Boucle, as will Czech Roman Kreuziger (fifth in the 2013 Tour).

It won't be a closed shop of champions though. The likes of Rigoberto Uran, now free to focus on glory with his new team Omega Pharma-Quick, and Tejay Van Garderen needs to establish himself strongly as the official boss of the BMC squad. You can't write off Andy Schleck who has the potential to return to form at any time.

While teh overall is being battled out, daily skirmishs between the sprinters will be wowing the crowds. Peter Sagan is at the top of his game, but André Greipel is fresh from three wins at teh Santos Tour Down Under while vets Tom Boonen, Nacer Bouhanni, and Philippe Gilbert have a lot to prove.
