German victory in season opener Down Under
19 January 2013, Adelaide
Marcel Kittel (Giant-Shimano) opened his account with victory in the 50 kilometre Tour Down Under's pre-race criterium.
25 laps on a two kilometre long circuit in the streets of Adelaide was the menu and a breakaway without was launched from the get-go. With five laps remaining, Team Sky picked up the pace in the pack while Lotto-Belisol were keeping themselves very close to the front behind the black-dressed squad.
On the final lap, Lotto-Belisol took over the control of the field and it looked like a win for André Greipel but on the final metres, Marcel Kittel (Giant-Shimano) rocketed away and took the victory ahead of his compatriot.
The Tour Down Under starts on Tuesday.
