La Vuelta - Stages 18 & 19

2013 Daily Peloton

13 September April 2013: Stage 19 - S. Vicente Barquera to Oviedo.Alto Naranco, 181 km: Horner back in the Maillot Rojo as his relentless pressure on Nibali pays off.

The fat lady is getting into her warm-up, but whether she will be singing the Stars & Stripes or Il Canto degli Italiani is too close to call - three seconds too close. That's the margin that Chris Horner of RadioSchack Leopard has over Vicenzo Nibali of Astana after he took back the race lead, a "fag paper's difference" as they say in the UK, but coming with a distinct feeling of momentum on the American's part.

The duel though didn't dstract form a superb stage win by Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) who finished 11 seconds ahead of Diego Ulissi (Lampre-Merida) and teammate Daniel Moreno in third. Samuel Sanchez whose chances in the Vuelta went out the backdoor on the second stage when he lost a large chunk of time took fourth. Horner was next, 14 seconds behind the leader, but with a priceless six seconds advantage over Nibali to make the step up to the top spot on the podium.
