La Vuelta - Catchup after 13 Stages

2013 Daily Peloton

6 September April 2013: As the race nears the end of its second week Vicenzo Nibali has wrested back the race lead from Chris Horner. Phillipe Gilbert finally claimed the win that had eluded him all year when he took stage 12.

After 13 stages Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) leads a group of four men who are still in serious contention of the overall. The money has to be on the Italian wearing red in Madrid, but necessarily for the whole of the remaining time. Nicolas Roche (Saxo Bank-Tinkoff) is just 31 seconds addrift and looking as strong as he did when he wore the jersey for a day a few days back. Snapping at his heels are Alejandro Balverde (Movistar) and Chris Horner level (Radioshacj Leopard) on 46" behind Nibali. The lead could flip flop back betwen these men as it has over the last two weeks, but Nibali's consistency makes him the favourite.

Stage 13 - Valls / Castelldefels, 169km

Warren Barguil (Team Argos-Shimano) held off Rinaldo Nocentini (Ag2r-La Mondiale) and Bauke Mollema (Belkin) to claim the win, the biggest win of his career on the stage from Valls to Castelldefels. The 21-year-old Frenchman attacked a nine-man break with one kilometre to go.

Stage 12 Maella / Tarragona, 164.2km

It has ben a miserable year for World champion Philippe Gilbert (BMC) but the win-drought finally broke for the Belgian as he took his win of the year in Tarragona. Gilbert had to pull back Edvald Boassen Hagen who looked to have the win wrapped up after a move.

Phillipe Gilbert: "I have only one word: finally. I’ve trained so hard this year but I’ve remained frustrated by not winning until today… However, I never lost neither my motivation nor the trust by my team, my friends and my family. With the World’s coming up, I was feeling the pressure and that makes me even happier to win today. Like last year, my first victory of the season happens in Catalunya, maybe I should consider riding the Volta Catalunya [his last participation was in 2005]."
