Review: Multipower Fit Protein Lite Drink & Power Layer Bar

You work hard, spend hours in the saddle building endurance, even more in the gym to develop upper body strength and core stability - it hurts, and the last thing you want  is any of that effort to go to waste.

Protein is also an energy source, but the body can't store protein so a steady supply is vital. A rule of thumb is 2g per day per kilogram to ensure muscle repair and growth.

Sources of protein. Eggs, meat, fish, pulses and dairy products are high-quality sources of protein. Protein supplements are also very important as they are very low in calories and fat.

Don't forget the Carbs: You should though leave a certain basic amount of high-quality carbs in your diet in the form of fruit, vegetables, dairy products, whole-grain products and nuts. The minerals and vitamins that they contain are also power nutrients for your body.

It is essential then to get nutrition back in the system quickly, ideally in a  way that requires the least amount of preparation, and tastes half decent.

Multipower, the official nutrition sponsor to the Giro d'Italia have two new products that put ticks in all three boxes, the Fit Protein Lite drink (53g of protein)  and the Power Layer Bar (19.8g of protein, 23.8g of Carbs) which both provide a high percentage of protein essential to recovery and muscle repair.

The importance of Protein. Most cyclists know that protein is the building substance for muscle, but many assume that protein promotes muscle growth which equates to bulk and weight - which is anathema to a cyclist. Muscles though need to repair after heavy exercise, and don't forget muscles though also consume calories which helps weight loss.

DP's Verdict

Fit Protein Lite Drink does what it says on the plastic bottle* . Not all of us have the means or time to rustle up a protein shake which is where the Fit Protein Lite Drink comes in handy.

It has a light texture and is low in things you don't want, like fat. Straight out of the fridge it tastes really quite nice and we even found it was OK to drink at room temperature, though we might revise that if we were in the centre of Spain at the time.

It comes in Neapolitan range of three flavours: strawberry, vanilla and chocolate.

*to paraphrase the catchphrase for a well known (in the UK) brand of weather proofing.

Power Layer Bar

DP's Verdict

While food all ends up liquidised in the stomach sometimes the act of biting into something is all it takes to make you feel you have actually eaten.

The Power Layer Bar gives you that, while avoiding the heavy stodgy texture that many protein bars have.

It's great tasting with a comparatively light texture. You will want to keep it cool if you can. Like all chocolate coated products it can be  messy to eat in warmer weather. You will also want to wash it down with lashings of electrolyte drink or water after a tough workout or long ride.

Multipower's description:

"With 33% protein the Power Layer Bar is a convenient protein and carbohydrate rich snack. The great tasting bar contains premium quality ingredients, with 23.8g of carbohydrates and 19.8g of protein to aid muscle recovery after exercise."

Key features

  • 60g bar
  • High in protein – 33% protein per bar
  • No artificial colours
  • Four layers of nuts, caramel, crispies and chocolate
  • Aspartame-free
