Mark Cavendish 'not welcome' at Dutch criterium following incident with Veelers
Britain's Mark Cavendish has been banned by the organsiers of the Boxmeer Criterium in the Netherlands, Dutch news agency ANP said on Thursday, reporting that race organisers had withdrawn his name from the list of starters.
Cavendish's rejection is directly related to the incident involving Cavendish and Tom Veelers on stage 10, in which a collision between the two resulted in Veelers crashing. While the race commissaires ruled that Cavendish had nothing to answer for Boxmeer organiser Twan Poels told NOS television, "I saw the images of the sprint on the television and together with the committee I decided to withdraw Cavendish from our list of participants. The jury may think that he was not responsible for Tom Veelers' fall. We think the complete opposite."
The decision further polarises the camps for and against Cavendish, which saw one fan spray the Briton with urine during Thursday's Stage 11 time trial.
