Poor visibility and snow has forced the Giro organisers to miss out the section of the route via Sestriere. The race is still planned to finish in Bardonecchia with an 11.8km extension due to the alternate route around Sestriere.
Dave Brailsford, Team Sky principal supported the decsion, "Of course you have to put safety first. From the start of the Giro when we saw the weather conditions, we knew it would be unlikely or doubtful this stage would go ahead as planned. I think it is good news, it would have been a great stage but safety first."
15.46 CET, 65km to go: A break of for Italians, Luca Paolini (Katusha), Daniele Pietropoli (Lampre), Sonny Colbrelli (Bardiani Valvole) and Matteo Trentin (Omega Pharma-Quick Step), have a lead of 10 minute. Back in the peloton three riders have been in a bad crash, Italians Enrico Battaglin (Bardiani Valvole) and Alessandro Vanoti of Astana together with Robinson Chalapud of Colombia. The Italians were the most seriously hurt and have abandoned the race, possibly with broken bones - ribs for Battaglin, collarbone for Vanoti.
Briton David Millar has also abandoned, but his was as much to do with his role being largely redundant after team leader Ryder Hesjedal abandoned before yesterday's stage. He also has a new addition to the family.
