2013 Ladies Tour of Qatar - Stage 3
Wild takes second consecutive stage win and overall lead in Qatar. Leader Hosking loses lead after flat tyre in final kilometer.

Kirsten Wild (Argos-Shimano) has claimed stage 3 in the Ladies Tour of Qatar (Jan 31) in Madinat Al Shamal by winning the bunch sprint ahead of Ellen van Dijk (Specialized-Lululemon) and Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle Honda). Race leader Chloe Hosking (Hitec Products) punctured in the final kilometer and lost the leaders jersey to Wild by just 3 seconds.

After the start in Al Thakira the peloton covered 48 km in the first hour due to the strong tailwind. Due to this there were no significant breakaways and the Argos-Shimano team kept all together until the first sprint in Al Zubara, where Wild pipped Hosking.

Immediately afterwards the road turn right straight into the crosswind. Orica-AIS and Specialized-Lululemon moved to the front of the peloton and due to the joined forces and a crash of Elena Cecchini in the middle of the bunch allowed a group of 18 to break clear. In this group amongst others Chloe Hosking, Kirsten Wild, Gracie Elvin, Emma Johansson, Ellen van Dijk and Trixi Worrack. In the second bunch the Wiggle Honda team with Bronzini and Gilmore did a tremendous job to bring back the second group forming a new leading group of 33 riders.

With 16 km to go Lisa Brennauer (Specialized-Lululemon) and Chantal Blaak (TIBCO-To The Top) slipped away but a few kilometers ahead they were swept up by the Argos-Shimano team. Despite a crash inside the final 10 kilometers which involved Rochelle Gilmore, Liesbet de Vocht and a Chinese rider the first group remained together. Within the final kilometer race leader Hosking had to deal with a flat tyre while Wild rounded off the perfect teamwork.

“We hoped this morning that there would be an attack from a group and that it would come to a sprint at the end. But because of the speed, there was no early break. At the first sprint, which I won ahead of the race leader, Chloe Hosking, a group of 18 riders, including Elke Gerbhard and myself, formed off the front due to a crash. We didn’t put too much effort in, and just before the second sprint the chase group came back, creating a group of 39 riders, including 5 of our team.”, said Wild.

“At the second sprint there were 2 riders off the front and I was able to take third, so that put me within 7 seconds of the jersey. In the finale our team was fantastic; they kept control and chased down all the attacks. In the last 5 kilometers they really controlled the bunch, and it was up to me to perform well in the sprint, although it wasn’t easy. I got on Ellen van Dijk’s wheel and was able to come around her in the end to take the win. Hosking punctured in the finale, so she was unable to contest the sprint. That meant I was able to take the leader’s jersey as well. Now we need to make a good plan for tomorrow; it will be a hard day, but the others will have to come up with a good tactic to beat our strong team and take the jersey. At least I can say that we are ready for the fight.”
