Wiggle Honda riders on podium at Mexico Track World Cup
Elinor Barker and Amy Roberts to take Bronze in Team Pursuit alongside Ciara Horne..
Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling's 18-year-old riders, Elinor Barker and Amy Roberts, took a hard fought bronze medal in the Team Pursuit event at the Track World Cup in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Riding for Welsh Team USN, with 23-year-old Ciara Horne, the Welsh trio qualified third fastest, behind Olympic bronze medallist Canada and a powerful team from the Ukraine, then easily overcame Italy in the ride off for third place.
Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling's Beatrice Bartelloni had been part of the Italian team in qualification, but the 19-year-old was rested for the medal race. The guaranteed fourth place achieved with Bartelloni in the team was enough to secure overall World Cup victory for Italy, however, with Team USN taking second.
Just hours after her bronze medal performance, Roberts raced to sixth place in her first ever senior World Cup Points Race, one place ahead of new Italian teammate, former three-time World champion Giorgia Bronzini.
Day two of the event saw Bartelloni finish eighth in the Individual Pursuit, behind Polish rider Katarzyna Pawlowska, who had won the previous day’s Points Race, while Elinor Barker made a promising start to the Women’s Omnium. Unfortunately, on day three, Barker was unable to compete with the more experienced riders - including four-time Individual Pursuit World champion Sarah Hammer of the United States, who totally dominated the event - and she finished in 15th place.
