Bradley Wiggins suffers broken ribs and finger in van collision
Olympic and Tour de France Champion Bradley Wiggins is undergoing treatment for injuries after being struck by a van whilst on a training ride
The crash, which took place not far from the Sky rider's home in Eccleston, Lancashire, at about 6pm last night reportedly occurred when a van existing a petrol station failed to see the passing Wiggins.
His injuries which include suspected cracked ribs and a fractured finger were less severe than first thought when he was treated at the scene despite the van's wing mirror being shorn off by the impact. Witnesses did report however the rider was in severe distress immediately after the incident and 'was turning blue' according to one.
Lancashire Police issued the following statement: 'Police were called to the scene of a road traffic accident at Crow Orchard Road in Wrightington at about 6pm this evening. A cyclist has been involved in a collision with a white Vauxhall Astra car. The rider of the bike, a 32-year-old local man, was taken to hospital by ambulance with injuries not thought to be life-threatening. His family have been told.'
The woman driver, who has not been named by police, was already in shock when she was informed by police that she had hit the multiple champion. No charges have yet been made against the driver but on twitter Cycling Weekly in remarks it attributed to Wiggin's wife Catherine referred to the accident as a SMIDSY 'Sorry Mate I Didn't See You'. Mrs Wiggins later denied making the comment.
