2012 Paris Correze: Stage 1

The first stage of the 12th Paris-Correze got off to a flying start on 1st August, starting in the town of Contres and finishing in Sassay in the Loir-et-Cher department.

Pierre-Luc Perrichon (La Pomme Marseille) made a tremendous impact throughout the race, taking a solitary lead of no less than 100km This 25 year old newcomer to the Pomme Marseille has already had a good season, having won the Classique of the Coupe de France, Paris-Camembert. Unfortunately for him in this race, there was no prize for most combatative rider, so his massive efforts went unrewarded. The peloton let him make an advance of 3’30”, but FdJ-Bigmat were always in the background preparing the way for Arnaud Demare, with Cofidis also managing the situation well.

The inevitable happened, the peloton regrouped with the 5km mark in sight and Perruchon was caught with 3km to go.

The British BMC Racing rider, Adam Blyth, took everybody by surprise in the final sprint at the end of the 168.1km course, ahead of the Australian Jonathan Cantwell of Saxobank and the Belgian Kevin Ista (Accent.Job-Willems Verandas).

The prize for the Meilleur Grimpeur went to Français Kevin Denis (Véranda Rideau).

So, Blythe will wear the green jersey for the second stage in the Monédières, where the riders will complete four climbs of the Col des Géants before tackling the Suc de May, at the summit of which will be the Souvenir Laurent Fignon, 15km from the arrivée.
