2012 Tour de France - Stage 12

The 99th Tour de France continued Friday with stage 12, starting in the town of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and finishing 226 kilometers later, the Tour's longest stage this year, in Annonay Davézieux. The stage was expected to be a day for the sprinters or a breakaway with two category 1 climbs early in the day and then mostly downhill before a late category 3 climb. At the end of the day, Garmin-Sharp's David Millar out sprinted his breakaway companions to take his four Tour de France career win. Jean-Christophe Peraud (AG2R La Mondiale) and Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) placed 2nd and 3rd on the stage.

An large escape group road away from the peloton early on the stage, but after the two category 1 climbs, which came early in the stage, the large group was shortened down to just five riders: David Millar (Garmin-Sharp), Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Jean-Christophe Peraud (AG2R La Mondiale), Robert Kiserlovski (Astana) and Cyril Gautier of Europcar. The breakaway decided to take a rest day on stage 12 and allowed the gap to reach 12 minutes.

The peloton rolled across the line nearly eight minutes after David Millar had won the stage. Matthew Goss (Orica-GreenEdge) took the sprint for 6th place and 15 points in the sprint classification. As Goss sprinted across the finish line, green jersey wearer, Peter Sagan, protested the Australian's sprint, saying that Goss had moved his sprint line.

Bradley Wiggins (Sky) kept his overall lead over his teammate, Chris Froome. Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) and Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) remain in 3rd and 4th place overall as the race flattens out in stage 13 before returning to the mountains on stage 14.
