2012 Tour de France - Stage 5

The sprinters got yet another chance in the first week of the Tour de France in stage 5, but nearly lost the chance to the early breakaway. German Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) won his second stage in two days, out sprinting Australian Matthew Goss (Orica-GreenEdge) and Juan José Haedo (Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank). World champion Mark Cavendish placed 5th in the stage.

The early breakaway featured a group of four men that remained in front of the peloton until the few final hundred meters. The breakaway featured - Pablo Urtasun (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Matthieu Ladagnous (FDJ-BigMat), Jan Ghyselinck (Cofidis) and Julien Simon (Saur-Sojasun). The group of four rode ahead of the peloton for over 190 kilometers of the 196 kilometer stage.

A repeat of yesterday happened in the final three kilometers of the stage when a nasty crash occurred near the front of the peloton and once again took down sprinters as well as others. Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Sharp) hit the ground hard after rubbing shoulders with a Argos-Shimano rider. He crash caused others including Peter Sagan to also hit the deck. All who crashed will received the same time as stage winner Andre Greipel as the crash was within the final three kilometers of the race.

With less then 1 kilometer of racing remaining the breakaway was still ahead of the peloton and Ghyselinck attacked his breakaway companions in a surge to claim stage victory. As the man from Cofidis approached the final two hundred meters Matt Goss sprinted past him and closed down the breakaway, however, in the end Greipel overpowered Goss and won the stage yet again.
