2012 RaboSter Zeeuwsche Eilanden - Stage 3

Kirsten Wild (AA Drink-Leontien.nl) has won the third and final stage in the RaboSter Zeeuwsche Eilanden. In the 133,4 km stage from Westkapelle to Westkapelle Wild was the fastest in the sprint of a small break with Belgian Champion Evelyn Arys and Amy Pieters in second and third. Race leader Amy Cure finished in fourth with Lizzie Armitstead rounding off the top five. The fourth place of Cure was not enough to win the final ranking due to the time bonuses at the finish and the three intermediate sprints which were all won by Wild. In the overall ranking Wild won by three seconds over Cure and 12 seconds over Amy Pieters.

The stage included a big lap with the Oosterscheldekering, the Zeelandbrug, the cobbles of Geersdijk and two finishing circuits of 16 km with each time the Westkapelse Zeedijk. Due to a massive crash in the first 10 km including Lizzie Armitstead, Laura van der Kamp, Sofie van Horik, Dominique van Santen and a bunch of others the stage was neutralized for more than 10 minutes. Armitstead was able to continue the stage while others as Van Horik had to leave the race with a broken collarbone.

Despite the bunch broke into several parts in the first 20 km all came back together after 50 km. On the cobbles in Geersdijk Geerike Schreurs (Van der Breggen) and Anna van der Breggen (both Sengers LCT) attacked. The latter one went solo but was brought back several kilometers ahead.

At the first passage at the finish line with 32 km to go a group of 80 riders was in front led by Jayco-AIS, Rabobank and AA Drink. In the finishing circuits nothing happened despite the strong crosswinds on the Zeedijk. Despite attempts of Ensing, Van der Breggen, Ferrand-Prevot and De Vocht all was still together with 2 km to go.

In the final 2 km on the final time the Westkapelse Zeedijk 10 riders were able to break clear Wild, Arys, Pieters, Cure, Armitstead, Düster, Slappendel, Knetemann, Koedooder and Van der Breggen. In the sprint Wild won very convincing raising both arms in the air 50 meters before the finishline.
