Stage 3: Martigny - Aarberg, 194.7km

Slovakian Peter Sagan (Liguigas) took his second stage win at the 2012 Tour de Suisse, adding to victory in the time trail on stage one. Sagan edged out Baden Cooke (Orica-GreeEdge) after overtaking him in the closing metres, with Ben Swift (Sky) taking third spot. Cooke, behind a strong lead out by Michael Albasini had looked to have the win in the bag, especially with Sagan almost crashing in the penultimate bend, but the Aussie hadn't the power to hold of the latter. Sagan now has ten wins this season, including five at the Tour of California.

The result was almost thwarted when the peloton fell victim to Switzerland's famously punctual railway and train barriers closed 55 km from the finish. 14 riders, among them overall leader Rui Costa, sneaked past underneath the barrier, but the rest of the peloton had to wait until the train had gone past. After some discussions, the race judges decided to stop the 14 riders and to make them wait for the remaining riders of the peloton. Further up the road though were three riders who had been in a breeakaway for over 100km, Michael Morkov (Saxo), Guillaume Bonnafond (AG2R) and Jonas van Genechten (Lotto-Belisol) who gained another two minutes to what would turn out to be a maximum of over eithg minutes lead. It still wasn't enough and they were sept up in the last three kilometres after a 188km break.

Rui Costa (Movistar) retained the overall lead and will start stage 4 from Aarberg to Trimbach/Olten with eight seconds over Fränk Schleck (RadioShack-Nissan) and 15 seconds over Roman Kreuziger (Astana).
