| Movistar rider Rui Costa showed his climbing strength at stage two of this year's Tour de Suisse when he attacked on the final uphill up to Verbier inside the final two kilometers. Costa pulled back Frank Schleck (RadioShack-Nissan) who had attacked with six kilometers remaining in the stage. The Movistar rider caught Schleck with just two-hundred meters until the finish line, Schleck did not have energy left for the sprint and finished second behind Costa. Mikel Nieve (Euskaltel-Euskadi) finished next to place 3rd.
Stage 1 winner Peter Sagan of Liquigas-Cannondale was unable to retain his overall lead as he sat up with about ten kilometers left. Rui Costa now leads the race with Frank Schleck and Roman Kreuziger place 2nd and 3rd.
SpiderTech rider Ryan Anderson and Alessandro Bazzana (Team Type 1 – Sanofi) made up the day's breakaway, the two put up a good fight against the peloton to stay away, but after several teams including Schleck's RadioShack-Nissan putting men on the front of the peloton to chase the two men down the gap crumbled and they were reeled in. The duo was dragged back in with under thirty kilometers left to race as the GC contenders lined up for the final climb.
With under ten kilometers remaining in stage 2, the lead group on the road was down to under forty riders. At the six kilometer mark Frank Schleck attacked the group and quickly established a 20 second gap over 1 kilometer. In the group behind, Lampre-ISD failed to establish a chase for Damiano Cunego.
Four kilometers later, Rui Costa attacked in an attempt to chase down the Luxembourg climber. The rider from Movistar chased down Schleck and caught him with 200 meters left, he out sprinted Schleck to win the stage and take the overall lead.
