Tomorrow, a number of the country’s best bicycle racers will descend on Lake Bluff, Illinois, for the Lake Bluff Twilight Criterium presented by Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital. As the 6th stage of the USA Crits Championship Series, the event will bring in top male and female riders from across the country as they compete for nearly $20,000 in prize money.
EVENT SCHEDULE
2:30 p.m. - Men Cat 2/3 - 60 minutes (Purse: $1,000)
3:40 p.m. - Masters Men 35+ Cat 1/2/3 3 - 50 minutes (Purse: $750)
4:40 p.m. - Women Pro/1/2 - 60 minutes (Purse: $7,500)
5:45 p.m. - Kids Race - 100m to 1 lap (Medals)
6:15 p.m. - Men Pro/1 Invitational 2 - 90 minutes (Purse: $10,000)
Racers will likely do well over 30 mph around the technical, six-turn course that twists through the heart of Lake Bluff. The short course will provide spectators a unique opportunity to witness the speed and tactics of bicycle racing firsthand.
Already, pro riders from Brooklyn, New York to Ventura, California, have signed on to race against competition from across the Midwest. “The fields look intense,” said former National Criterium Champion Rahsaan Bahati.
With a $7,500 payout for the women’s event, Lake Bluff has drawn some of the nation’s top pro women riders according to current Women’s Road U.S. National Champion Robin Farina (NOW and Novartis for MS).
“The fact that they were really putting a lot of effort to get the women out there, we were like, 'Heck yeah, we'll go to Lake Bluff instead of Philly.’ So we're going to go and bang out a new course and have some fun with the crits. And hopefully get a win," Farina said.
Joining Farina will be Erica Allar (RIDECLEAN/PatentIt) who currently leads the USA Crits Championship Series overall, the always formidable Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom/Rose Bandit Racing) and the women occupying spots three and four in the overall, Colleen Gulick (Pure Energy Cycling ProAirHFA) and Colleen Hayduk (RideClean/Patentit.com) respectively.
On the men’s side, not only will riders have to contend with former National Criterium Champion Rahsaan Bahati but also Team Mountain Khakis/SmartStop Team rider Luke Keough who’s sitting only points away from the series lead.
While the Lake Bluff Twilight Criterium will be drawing racers from across the country, some local riders will also be vying for the win. Glencoe, Illinois, professional racer Mike Sherer (Optum p/b Kelly Benefits Pro Team) packs a tremendous sprint and is hot off racing at the Tour of Guatemala. Sherer says he’s excited for the opportunity to race close to home.
“I rarely get to race in front of family and friends,” said Sherer. “With that comes a lot of pressure to perform well. I really look forward to racing this coming weekend.”
In addition to Sherer, another local favorite is Mike Heagney who works in the Lake Forest area.
