Giro Donne returns in 2012 with nine stages
 
The Giro Donne/International Women's Tour of Italy returns in 2012 with nine stages and is set to feature the best cyclists in the world. The nine stages will cover nearly 1000 km to go through the 7 regions of: Campania, Lazio, Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Veneto, Piedmont and Lombardy. These are the numbers of the 23rd edition of International Women's Tour of Italy, which this year will be staged from 29 June to 7 July 2012.

Naples will host the first pink jersey assignment, while Bergamo will crowned the 2012 Giro queen. The Neapolitan city will celebrate the most important women stage race participants with the official teams presentation, scheduled for Thursday June 28.

2012 Giro Donne Stages

Stage 1: 29 June: Napoli - Terracina (LT) 139 km
Stage 2: 30 June: Roma - Roma 8 km individual time trial
Stage 3: 1 July: Montecatini (PT) - Montecatini (PT) 99 km
Stage 4: 2 July: Vernio (PO) - Castiglione dei Pepoli (BO) 126 km
Stage 5: 3 July: Polesella (RO) - Molinella (BO) 126 km
Stage 6: 4 July: Modena - Salsomaggiore (PR) 124 km
Stage 7: 5 July: Salice Terme (PV) - Castagnole delle Lanze (AT) 120 km
Stage 8: 6 July: Crugnola di Mornago (VA) - Lonate Pozzolo (VA) 117 km
Stage 9: 7 July: Sarnico (BG) - Bergamo 108 km

At the start of 2012 GiroDonne will be present the 10 best teams in the world and other that will be invited. No one of the major international athletes, including the 2011 pink jersey Marianne Vos, will miss the important appointment with Tour of Italy.

Sara Brambilla, head of the organizing committee, after the formalization of the route race explains: “Despite the critical current economic situation and the non-payment of one of last year shirt sponsors that caused us a lot of problems, we are proud to announce that GiroDonne this year will take place regularly. A heartfelt thank you goes to our historical sponsors and the new ones who believe in our project. I'm sure that also this year female cycling will give us great emotions.”
