One day after her impressive win in the Holland Hills Classic Annemiek van Vleuten (Rabobank) continued her winning streak in the 7-Dorpenomloop Wijk & Aalburg, The Netherlands (May 26). Van Vleuten was the best in the sprint with three over Shelley Olds (AA Drink-Leontien.nl) and Australian National Road Champion Amanda Spratt (Orica-GreenEdge). The three broke clear out of a larger break which dominated the whole race. Marieke van Wanroij, Chantal Blaak, Iris Slappendel, Pauline Ferrand Prevot, Gracie Elvin, Suzanne de Goede and Roxane Knetemann completed the top ten.

The race over 121,2 km (3 big laps of 28,5 km and 3 smaller laps of 11,3 km) started without local and one of the top favorites Marianne Vos. Vos crashed hard in the Hills Classic one day ago and broke her collarbone. She was still able to complete the race in second position.

From the beginning there was lots of crosswinds and due to that and also a crash 6 km into the race the bunch broke into several parts. After only 20 km into the race a large break of 29 riders was able to break clear. The 29 worked well together and contained all the big names apart from Tour of Chongming Island winner Melissa Hoskins. Hoskins was still suffering from a jetlag and a crash in the GP Gatineau last Monday. The break included: Annemiek van Vleuten, Sarah Düster, Iris Slappendel, Roxane Knetemann, Pauline Ferrand Prevot , Marieke van Wanroij, Emma Pooley, Shelley Olds, Lucy Martin, Chantal Blaak, Amanda Spratt, Chloe McConville, Gracie Elvin, Jessica Allen, Nina Kessler, Edwige Pitel, Sanne van Paassen, Willeke Knol, Judith Jelsma, Hannah Welter, Kelly Markus, Esra Tromp, Suzanne de Goede, Janneke Kanis, Christine Majerus, Martina Thomasson, Sandra van Veghel, Kim de Baat and Annette Edmondson.

Already in the second big lap it was already clear that the winner of the race was one of the 29 as behind nobody was able to setup a chase with all the big teams having their riders in the break. In front Rabobank tried to reduce the break but it took until the end of the third big lap before nine riders broke clear including Pauline Ferrand Prevot, Iris Slappendel, Annemiek van Vleuten, Suzanne de Goede, Amanda Spratt, Gracie Elvin, Shelley Olds, Marieke van Wanroij and Chantal Blaak.

In the penultimate lap Van Vleuten attacked a few times but only Olds and Spratt were able to follow. Spratt as non-sprinter tried to surprise the others in the final kilometers but ended up in third. Van Vleuten made it a long sprint with Olds finishing a bike length behind in second.
