GIRO D’ITALIA - 22 May 2012

Stage 20 – Caldes - Passo dello Stelvio (Cimo Coppi), 219km, High Mountains

The Belgian lion Thomas de Gendt (Vacasoleil) finally roared at the Giro taking a win that to use another feline analogy threw the cat amongst the pidgeons at the top of the General Classifaction. De Gendt had started the day in eight place 5'40" down on Maglia Rosa Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) but at one point on the final climb of the day, the 2757m Passo dello Stelvio, he was in virtual second place on the road and breaking hearts amongst the favourites with each passing kilometre.

De Gendt never quite got level with Rodriguez but Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin Barracuda) who must have thought his only rival was the Spaniard found himself in the novel position of defending his second place on GC. He managed it at the last gasp but the rider with a definite podium place under threat was Michele Scarponi and only a desperate attack in the rapidly thinning air of the Stelvio could save him from de Gendt's onslaught on the podium. He did so and while he was passed by Rodriguez with a few hundred metres left for the second day in a row, his place on GC was secure for one more night.

De Gendt moved up into fourth place overall ahead of Ivan Basso (Liquigas), claiming as he did the Cima Coppi prize in the process. His chances are not yet over. He has tomorrow's inal stage, an individual time trial, to gain the 27" that separate him from Scarponi. It's the stuff of nightmares for the Italian.

More to follow....
