FANTASY SPRING - MILAN SANREMO RESULTS

What a surprising start of the 1st "Fabio's Fantasy Spring". In spite of an overwhelming majority of participants from the U.S., and English-speaking countries in general, the first race of the game, the "Virtual Milan-San Remo", saw two "Virtual Teams" neither from the States nor from any other English-speaking nation take the Top 2 places.

So are you thinking about Germany ? Belgium ? Italy ? Perhaps Denmark ? NONE of these !! To the surprise of many (myself included) the dominators of the "Virtual MSR" were from two not exactly cycling-mad places: the PHILIPPINES and PORTUGAL respectively !!

Indeed the "Virtual Cipollini", the uncontestable winner of the "Fantasy MSR" is a veteran of Fabio's Fantasy Games: Andre "Manghuhula" Umali from The Philippines. His "Spring Chicken run" team got 125 points, courtesy of Cipollini (60), Fred Rodriguez (46), Jan Svorada (18) and Domo's Van Petegem (1).

Mr. Umali is not new to victory anyway. He already took a stage in October, when taking part in the "Fantasy World Championships". No wonder that he nicknamed himself "Manghuhula". That's a word in the Filipino (Tagalog) language meaning "soothsayer", "future-teller" ... and he actually seems to have these particular skills ... and use them to foresee the winner and pick him up in his Fantasy Game team ... So congrats to Mr. Umali. Let's see if this great guesser will prove able to use all of his "divining skills" until the last race and claim overall victory after Amstel Gold Race.

One thing is for sure though: he will have to face stiff competition from many contenders. Starting from the MSR runner-up: Portugal's "Martins" (guess his name is Ze' Pedro or anything similar). Despite him choosing Freire instead of the real MSR winner Cipollini, his "Vela" team earned 114 points: 28 from the World Champion but also 46 from Rodriguez, 38 from Markus Zberg, 1 point from Van Petegem and 1 "Trade Team Point" courtesy of Mapei-Quick Step (that's the score reserved to the squad of MSR fifth-place getter).

The American honour was satisfied by Patrick Sharp and John Eicherberger. Both earned 111 points, but according to the "tie-breaking rules" the remaining (virtual) podium spot was taken by Mr. Sharp and his "Locutus" team. Indeed rules clearly say that:

"In case two or more teams finish with the same number of points, the tie will be broken according to the following RULES (they apply to both RACE and GENERAL Classifications): A) The biggest number of points earned by the BEST RIDER of the virtual team";

and as, unlike Mr. Eicherberger, Patrick Sharp had the best-placed rider (Cipollini) in his line-up, he authomatically took third place.

The presence of a German lady ("Cristine" of Cycling4fans.de) and a Belgian participant (Luc Desplancke) in the TOP 10 completed the great day of nonEnglish-speakers. The "defending champion" (namely Joe Coughlin, winner of the last Fantasy Game in October, the "Fantasy Worlds") had no such great start though, as he got 2 points only and ranked 98th. The result of Emily King, winner of the "Best Team Name Award", wasn't any better: indeed "all the men's king" proved unable to give her a single point.

Some of the team you sent are not included here, because the riders were not chosen according the rules, and thus they were not accepted, sorry. Both Brannon Amtower and Dwight Phillips sent two different teams, of course in both cases only the first of them was accepted. As for team names, a couple of them was mentioning website addresses, and as in the rules I asked not to promote websites via your Virtual Teams, I "slightly" changed the names. The name of Zach Vanderkooy's team has been changed too.

Thanks to all participants, and in particular to those who spent kind words for my game. The second leg of "Fabio's Fantasy Spring" is the "Fantasy Tour of Flanders", to run on Sunday, April the 7th 2002. The rules are the same as in the "Virtual MSR", but you have to enter NEW Virtual Teams, better new line-ups, for the race: the ones you chose for MSR are not good any longer. The Riders and Teams list will be online in the days before the Ronde Van Vlanderen (that could be on Friday, April the 5th or the following Saturday ...). Let me congratulate the winner once again, and wish you all a very Happy Easter too.

See you all in two weeks

Fabio
