Interview: Danny Summerhill
A chat with Garmin-Cervélo's 22 year old talented Young Gun Danny Summerhill on
his cross career and 2012 ambitions
Danny Summerhill is an 22 year old American cyclist, who currently he
rides for the Chipolte Development team. A seven time USA champion in road and
cyclocross, he was born and raised in Colorado's capital, Denver.
Summerhill is 6' 1" tall and weighs about 177 pounds. Danny's all round
talents include short uphill sprints and sprint ead outs; but he is as
comfortable in a stage race, cyclocross and the mountain bike disciplines. An
aggressive rider Danny is often seen off the front in the breaks. In cyclocross
he is no less aggressive, his finest moment was winning a sliver medal in the
2007 U23 UCI World Cyclocross championships,

Luke Allingham:
What are your plans for 2012 season?
Danny Summerhill: Right now I am just
taking it one step at a time! I have been given an amazing opportunity from
Garmin to ride the end of season races with them which has been a lot of fun and
an incredible learning and experience. I will probably try to do a hand full of
cross races, mostly UCI and nationals, then officially call it a season.

L.A.: What do you like about Slipstream Sports -
Garmin-Cervélo?
Danny Summerhill: Well I have basically
been under JV's wing and the Slipstream fold since I was 16. So this is really
the only cycling home I have ever known. I think they do the best that can be
done, in everything they do as a team and for us as individual riders. This is
my home.
L.A.: How did you start the sport of cycling?
Danny Summerhill: Unlike everyone I grew
up with, my mom actually got me in to it when I was about 11. I raced everything
from BMX, to down hill, dual slalom, MTB and Cyclocross and eventually enjoyed
racing road and cyclocoss the most.
L.A.: What do
you think you career highlights are so far?
Danny Summerhill-2nd at the junior world Cyclocross world championships still
follows me around a bit but I’d like to move way from that cross image and more
in to road. Most recently, getting 3rd overall at the Tour of China last year
and 4th on the last stage of USA Pro Cycling Challenge, along with winning a
hand full of KOM and Sprint jerseys and best team GC over all a few times have
been huge highlights for me.

L.A.: What advice would you give to an amateur
cyclist who wants to become professional?
Danny Summerhill: Make sure you enjoy
what you are doing. Training hard and putting in the miles is hard, so of you
can look past the pain on those hard days and remember the fun in what you are
doing that should help!

L.A.: Do you have any hobbies that you do off the
bike?
Danny Summerhill: Dirt biking, snow
boarding, speed skating (ice) and hanging out with family and friends when time
allows.
