Team Raleigh - Building for 2012
Team adds the fast legs of Aussie Bernie Sulzberger and American Daniel
Holloway to their strong sprinters roster
After the signing of British Circuit Race Champion Graham Briggs, comes news
that Raleigh have signed 2008 Australian Criterium Champion Bernie Sulzberger
and US Pro Criterium Champion 2010 Daniel Holloway Both signings are key for
Raleigh, not just to give the brand publicity in different parts of the World
but both riders also have very impressive palmares and with their history in
circuit racing being so strong, Raleigh certainly look to have a very
competitive team for the 2012 Tour Series.
Bernie Sulzberger is a very talented
Aussie who has a winning history in races both in Australia and America. In his
early years he rode for the same team that Russell Downing rode for, DFL which
was a British sponsor and over the years has shown quite a diverse talent on the
bike from winning the mountains prize in a major classic Australian stage race,
the Sun Tour, to outsprinting Greg Henderson to win one of the Bay Crits earlier
this year.
Bernie is the brother of Wesley, who medalled in the Under 23 Worlds and
while Wesley rode for French team FDJ, Bernie was a victim of the failed Pegasus
Pro-continental team project in 2011.
While he is a rider who can win crits, he can also do well in road races and
went on to finish fourth in the Aussie Road Race Championships showing how
versatile he is. This year, he has ridden for the top Australian team of Fly V.
Now, it’s over to Britain next year after more racing at the Bay Crits in
January of 2012. Bernie says of the opportunity, “I’m really looking forward to
fresh start at Raleigh in 2012. I have been racing in America the last three
years and really looking forward to a change of scenery and race program.”
“It has been four years since I spent time racing in Europe (Belgium), and
I’m looking forward to the UK racing which will suit my style of racing well.
I’m also looking forward to a leadership role for the young guys on the team for
next season and it will be great to have young guys on the team that are willing
to learn and take on board what I have to offer….”.
As well as an Australian champion, Raleigh have also signed an American
sprint star, Daniel Holloway. The
24-year-old Californian moves to Team Raleigh from Kelly Benefit Strategy.
Daniel has an impressive record having previously held the US Elite National
Criterium title before taking the US Professional Criterium Championship in
2010. Daniel is a flamboyant sprinter who is equally at home on the road and
track and is also an accomplished 6-day rider.
Career highlights include USA Pro Criterium Championship; 2009-2010 US Worlds
Team Member on the Track and three time US National track champion (Scratch,
Madison, Team Pursuit). Team Director Cherie Pridham says, “we are very pleased
to welcome Daniel to the team where he will be a big asset to our sprinting
strengths.”
In other signings, Raleigh have also signed young rider Matt Holmes for 2012.
Matt represented Great Britain recently at the World Junior Road Race
championships in Copenhagen and also finished 2nd overall behind Brennan
Townshend at the Junior Tour of Wales.
