UCI Road World Championships 2011 - ITT Elite Women
German Judith Arndt takes first ever ITT World Title at the age of 35. Arndt takes fourth win this week, her twelfth this season. Kiwi Linda Villumsen and last year's World Champion Emma Pooley complete podium.

19 -25 September 2011

German Judith Arndt has won her first ever ITT World Title in her career today. The 35 year old HTC-Highroad rider powered in the 27,8 km race to a final time of 37:07.38. Kiwi Linda Villumsen took silver in a time of 37:31.51 24 seconds behind. Defending champion Emma Pooley completed the podium in 37:33.54.

Canadian Tara Whitten finished in fourth and missed the bronze medal by 2 seconds. Compatriot and speedskater Clara Hughes rounded off the top five. The rest of the top 10 consists of Ellen van Dijk, Rhae-Christie Shaw, Amber Neben, Emilia Fahlin and Marianne Vos.

For Arndt it is her fourth win in 10 days after winning the Chrono Champenois and two stages in the Giro della Toscana last week. It's her twelfth win of the season. The final podium is the same podium as last year in Geelong only in a different order. Linda Villumsen moved up to second while Emma Pooley slipped to third.

Arndt admits to starting with high morale due to time trial victories in the recent past, though all the world's contenders were against her at once in Denmark.

"Today could not have been better," said Arndt, "I was feeling very confident after having a lot of time trial success this season, and I was feeling good physically also, after preparing my legs in the Giro Della Toscana last week. I have chased this medal for many years and I finally succeed. I won my first medal in the time trial in 1997 and since then I have tried to win the gold medal. I can't tell you how much it means to me. It's really a long time coming and finally it worked out. When I came into the finish I felt really dizzy and I could not believe fully that it finally happened."

"The bike [Specialized Shiv] was working perfectly, I didn't have to think about it, I just concentrated on having a perfect race. There were a lot of corners and the course was wet, but I was able to handle everything and had no mistakes or mechanical issues."

For Arndt it's her third world title in her career. In 1997 she was the best in the individual pursuit and in 2004 she was the best in the road race.

Last year's champion Emma Pooley was quite satisfied with her bronze medal. "Last year the course was hilly and that suited me. On flat courses like this I would have been lucky if I finished in the top 10 in the past. So with my third place I showed that I've improved my time trialing on a course that doesn't suit me at all."
