2011 Giro della Toscana - Femminile - Roundup
TIBCO's Megan Guarnier takes first big win in career by winning the overall ranking in Toscana. Germany takes all stage wins with HTC, Arndt (2x), Teutenberg (2x), Worrack and Becker.

Last week the women's peloton gathered together for the final international stage race of the season the Giro della Toscana - Femminile (Sept. 13-18). A roundup of the race won by TIBCO's Megan Guarnier.

Prologue (Viareggio 5,5 km)
The HTC-Highroad women's squad opens the Giro della Toscana Femminile with a victory. Russia and Gauss finished in second and third at respectively 13 and 24 seconds. MCipollini and the Australian National Team rounded off the top five. With young riders Ally Stacher (USA) and Katie Colclough (GB) in the lineup, this shared victory makes at least one win for every female rider with HTC-Highroad this year. The other HTC riders in the winning team are Charlotte Becker, Ina Teutenberg, Amanda Miller, Judith Arndt and Chloe Hosking. Defending champion Judith Arndt is the first overall leader.

"It was a flat circuit today," said sport director, Ronny Lauke, "A very simple course that came down to setting as strong of a pace as we could and maintaining it until the end."

"Our plan was to accelerate hard at the start and keep pace steady. We had Judith (Arndt), Ina (Teutenberg) and Charlotte (Becker) pulling on the long stretches and our younger riders leading out the short sections."

With another flat circuit tomorrow, the HTC-Highroad women have one hundred and seventeen kilometers to defend their lead and keep Judith Arndt in the leader's jersey.

"We have been on a bit of a winning streak over the past ten days (Ardeche) and we plan to keep the momentum here in Tuscany."

Stage 2 (Porcari - Altopascio 117.1km)
HTC-Highroad continued their winning streak in the Giro della Toscana. German Ina-Yoko Teutenberg won the bunch sprint in Altopascio over World Champion Giorgia Bronzini and Alona Andruk. Belinda Goss and Julia Martisova finished in fourth and fifth. Due to her win Teutenberg takes over the race lead from teammate Judith Arndt.

The stage was animated by a break of over 25 km gtom Katarzyna Sosna (Vaiano). Sosna was chased down in the final by the sprinters teams. Teutenberg took the lead with 250 meters to go to take a convincing win.

"There were no real threats from a break today" said sport director, Ronny Lauke, "The girls were strong in controlling the group and Ina made her move at the right time."

Teutenberg recalls, "One girl got ahead at the beginning and held a break with a max of two and a half minutes. We pulled her in at about forty kilometers."

"After the break was caught the peloton stayed together pretty much until the end, and we decided to stay out front and make it a hard race."

"The girls did a great job controlling and setting me up for the finish," Teutenberg continued, "I was out front for the last corner, and after I came out of it I took off with about two hundred meters to go."

This marks the eighth win in the past week for the women's team, and the one hundred and eleventh for the HTC-Highroad this year.

Stage 3 (Pontedera - Volterra 137.6km)
Judith Arndt added another win to HTC's impressive season account, the third consecutive stage win in this race. On top of the Volterra Arndt was 26 seconds faster than USA's Megan Guarnier (TIBCO) and 33 seconds than Claudia Häusler (Diadora Pasta Zara). Rasa Leleivyte, Sylwia Kapusta, Ashleigh Moolman, Tatiana Antoshina, Tatiana Guderzo, Polona Batagelj and Joanna van de Winkel rounded off the top ten. Due to her win Arndt took back the leader's jersey from Teutenberg.

After 29 km into the stage Francesca Tognali (Kleo Ladies Team) attacked and created a gap of 27 seconds. After Tognali was caught Stephanie Pohl and Eneritz Iturriaga attacked but a few kilometers ahead they were chased down by HTC.

Due to the hilly scenery it's a tough stage and after 80 km of racing the front group was down to about 30 riders. The next ones to attack were Germans Charlotte Becker and Trixi Worrack. They gained a maximum of almost two minutes. Worrack quickly got rid off Becker and went on solo but not for long as at the start of the final climb up the Volterra a group of about 17 riders still had a chance to win the stage. In this group: Claudia Häusler, Oxana Kozonchuk (Diadora - Pasta Zara), Megan Guarnier, Janel Holcomb (USA), Rasa Leleivyte, Flavia Oliveira (Vaiano Solaristech), Ashleigh Moolman, Joanna Van De Winkel (Lotto), Sylwia Kapusta, Tatiana Antoshina, Susanna Zorzi (Gauss), Tatiana Guderzo (MCipollini Gianbenini), Polona Batagelj (Slovenia), Amanda Spratt (Australia), Elena Cecchini (Colavita Forno d'Asolo), Carla Ryan (Garmin - Cervelo) and Judith Arndt and Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (HTC).

Arndt attacked with 3 km to go to add another win to her impressive palmares. A few days earlier she was also the best in the Chrono Champenois in France.

"There were a few good breaks today," said sport director, Ronny Lauke, "And a few tough climbs. There was even an echelon when we reached crosswinds toward the second half of the race, so it was a challenging stage."

"We had Charlotte in a two-rider breakaway with a rider from the German national team," said Lauke,"But the field was back together for the last climb."

"Ina set a brutal pace on the last climb, and a lot of riders fell behind," Lauke continued, "The fifteen riders who hung on included Judith, who took off in the last three kilometers to go and no one could catch her. She won by a bike length."

Morale is high for the HTC-Highroad women, and they are motivated to keep the momentum going into tomorrow's two stages, the latter of which being a 2.2 kilometer individual time trial. This is the one hundred and thirteenth win for team HTC-Highroad this year.

Stage 4A (Quarrata - Campi Bisenzio 67.3km)
Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (HTC) made it four in a row for HTC. The German won the bunch sprint in Campi Bisenzio over Monia Baccaile and World Champion Giorgia Bronzini. Elizabeth Armitstead and Marta Bastianelli finished in fourth and fifth. Race leader Judith Arndt lost one minute due to a mechanical and lost her leader's jersey to TIBCO's Megan Guarnier.

After 20 km of racing Valentina Bastianelli, Karin Aune and Elena Berlato broke clear and quickly build up a lead of 40 seconds. 15 kilometer ahead the break was chased down again due to the work of HTC-Highroad. The next one to attack was Sara Grifi (Michela Fanini) but her attempt didn't last long also a late attack of Martina Ruzickova (Michela Fanini) didn't succeed.

HTC perfectly led out Teutenberg for her second stage win in this race. HTC is unstoppable thus far winning all four stages.

"Ina set a hard pace from the beginning," said sport director, Ronny Lauke, "She kept it up and held out for the right moment at the end, then just outsprinted the rest of the group."

Stage 4B (Campi Bisenzio (ITT) 2.2km)
Judith Arndt has won the 2,2 km individual time trial in Campi Bisenzio. Arndt's victory makes five wins out of five stages so far in Tuscany for the HTC-Highroad team. Overall leader Megan Guarnier kept her lead by finishing second 5 seconds behind the German. Charlotte Becker finished in third, Elizabeth Armitstead in fourth and Silvia Valsecchi in fifth.

"I really prepared hard for the time trial today," said Arndt, "I wanted to give it everything I had."

"It was short, at just two point two kilometers, but it was really hard because there were two straightaways and two sharp u-turns. You had to brake for each turn and then work hard to get back up to speed on the straightaways."

Arndt and Teutenberg's victories put team HTC-Highroad at one hundred and fifteen wins for the season, while continuing a remarkable winning streak with twelve wins in the past twelve days through Ardeche and the Holland Ladies tour.

Stage 5 (Segromigno in Piano - Capannori 100.9km)
Trixi Worrack has stopped the HTC dominance in the Giro della Toscana but continued the winning streak of Germany in this race. The AA Drink rider, riding for the national team in this race, soloed to the win in Capannori. Svetlana Bubnenkova and race leader Megan Guarnier finished in second and third at 52 seconds. Caudia Häusler and Valentina Scandolara rounded off the top five. Due to her third place Guarnier extended her overall lead on her rivals. Guarnier now holds a 36 second lead ahead of Hausler and 1 minute 25 seconds ahead of Leleivyte with one stage to go. Judith Arndt didn't start anymore with an eye on the Worlds Time-Trial on Tuesday September 20.

Stage 5 completed five laps of 18,6 km with in each lap the Valgiano climb. In the second lap Bubnenkova broke clear with Amanda Miller, Monia Baccaile, Andrea Dvorak, Claudia Häusler and Megan Guarnier. In the descent the group was caught and a new group with Baccaile, Miller, Bubnenkova and Flavia Oliveira got away.

The break was chased down a few kilometers ahead but the bunch was down to about 60 riders. After 50 km Trixi Worrack was the animator of a new break with Valentina Scandolara, Romy Kasper, Valentina Bastianelli and Petra Dijkman. Amber Pierce (Diadora) went in the counter-attack but she was unable to bridge up to the front. With 20 km to go the break was caught by several other riders forming a new break of eleven with race leader Megan Guarnier and GC rivals Claudia Häusler and Rasa Leleivyte being part of it.

With less than 20 km to go Worrack attacked another time and turning into the final ten kilometers her gap was up to 40 seconds on the chase group led by Megan Guarnier. In the final kilometers Valentina Scandolara, Claudia Hausler, Megan Guarnier, Svetlana Bubnenkova and Eugenia Vysotska dropped the others in the chase but didn't get any closer on Worrack. Worrack was too far ahead and soloed to the win. Another one for Germany in this stage race. Bubnenkova and Guarnier dropped the others to finish in second and third.

Stage 6 (Lucca - Firenze, 110 km)
The HTC-Highroad women's team finished a very successful Giro della Toscana Femminile on Sunday with their sixth win out of seven races including the prologue. Charlotte Becker stepped up after the team pulled half of it's roster to prepare them for the World Championships in just a few days. Becker was the best of a three rider break outsprinting Svetlana Bubnenkova and Fabiana Luperini for the stage win. Giorgia Bronzini won the sprint of the bunch for fourth ahead of Marta Tagliaferro, Monia Baccaille, Marta Bastianelli, Romy Kasper, Belinda Goss and Grete Treier. Megan Guarnier finished in the bunch and secured her overall win. For the American it's her first big win in her career. Claudia Häusler and Rasa Leleivyte completed the final podium. Sylwia Kapusta, Tatiana Antoshina, Tatiana Guderzo, Polona Batagelj, Joanna van de Winkel, Flavia Oliveira and Elena Cecchini rounded off the top 10.

The first real break came after 33 km from Petra Dijkman and Silvia Valsecchi. The duo didn't get far as the Michela Fanini team chased them down. The peloton stayed together until reaching Firenze. On the final climb with 11 km to go Bubnenkova attacked and was followed by Becker and Luperini. In the sprint Becker was very superior adding another win to HTC's impressive account.

"We knew we had to get a girl in the break," said Lauke, "There were a lot of attacks, ongoing through the whole stage today."

The ninety-five kilometers from Lucca to Firenze was relatively flat with a category three climb.

"At eleven kilometers to go, Charlotte took of with two other riders and outsprinted them, it was a great win to watch."

This was the one hundred and fifteenth victory for HTC-Highroad this year
