Chente achieves his second victory in the Vuelta

It was in September 1997 when José Vicente "Chente" García Acosta achieved his first and only victory in Vuelta a España, until today. That time, it was a stage that had started in Oviedo and ended in the top of the Naranco climb. Those were the times, of course, when the Angliru did not exist in Vuelta a España yet.

Five years later and with a stage win in Le Tour, Eusebio Unzue´s rider has achieved one stage victory in Vuelta a España. And he did it brilliantly. This victory has been achieved in the same place where Vandenbroucke became a legend and Hinault made clear that he was going to win the Vuelta 1993.

Chente Garciá Acosta, the same as Santi Blanco did yesterday, took advantage of a sudden and early attack and he fought to the very end in order to celebrate this victory with his team; this has been the fourth victory achieved by iBanesto.com in this Vuelta 2002.

Aitor González has taken advantage of this stage as well because he has been able to reduce his time difference with Roberto Heras by four seconds. The difference between this two riders, first and second place overall, is 1:08. The final answer on Sunday.

There are riders who really deserve the glory. There are riders who really suffer to get their aim. That is why Chente García Acosta could celebrate his victory in Ávila. He knows very well what a rider must do to win and to have the sponsors satisfied. The rider from Tafalla gave his team the fourth victory in this Vuelta 2002. He was one of the nine protagonists of the day, but the one who got the glory.

The stage win by José Vicente García Acosta was achieved after having covered 177.8 kilometres that had started in Bejar and ended in Ávila. The other great protagonist of the day was the Kelme-Costa Blanca rider Aitor González, who was able to reduce his time difference in the overall standings by four seconds. There are 1:08 seconds to be fought for the Gold Jesrsey.

The Hoya climb was used by Osa, García Quesada, Rebollo, Caucchioli, García Acosta, Serrano, Atienza, Martín Perdiguero and Lavarinhas to break away from the group. They all were the absolute protagonists of a very useful break. In Serranillos climb it was confirmed that the final goal could be achieved and it was there when Chente thought that he was surrounded by too many riders.

In Navalmoral, the iBanesto.com rider decided to ride alone off the front. He attacked suddenly and even though Perdiguero wanted to follow his wheel, he could not follow his fast pace. It was next to the Ávila walls where this rider raised his arms celebrating his deserved triumph. This is his second victory in Vuelta a España (1997) and he is proud to have achieved a stage win in Le Tour as well in 2000.

Roberto Heras enjoyed the help of his team in order to control the race, but during the last two kilometres things changed slightly for him. Aitor González attacked and reduce his time difference with the Bejar-born rider in four seconds. There are 1:08 seconds between them now. But so far, Heras is still the leader overall and we still have two days ahead.

The First Bicycles of the Stars

The real stars of the peloton did not find it easy to get their first bicycles. People say that Joseba Beloki, who wants to win this edition of Vuelta a España, got his first bicycle in a contest. He had set his heart on it and his father had to buy so many tickets that, at the end, he spent more money in tickets than the cost of the bike itself.

For Chente García Acosta it was not easy to get his first bike either. His enthusiasm for cycling came to him even before he was born because when his mother was pregnant she used to follow the different races and tours with his father. The rider from Madrid Dani Clavero wanted to become a football player, but one day he hit the ball so hard that he hurt his finger and the doctors told him to practise a different sport, then his grandfather gave him a bicycle. Every single rider, professional or not, has a little story related to their first bicycle.

20th Stage - Ávila - Warner Bros. Park (141.2 kilometres)  

The sprinters who have been able to reach this point of the race will have here another chance to show their abilities. The riders, in general, will meet their most enthusiastic followers in Fuenlabrada. The stage is short and the route easy and there will probably be thousands and thousands of followers marking the way to Warner Bros. Park, but first they will have to climb two third category mountain passes, Alto de Paramera and Alto del Rey. But the show will come in Móstoles, Fuenlabrada and San Martín de la Vega. The leaders´ teams will have be very careful and those riders who has not shone will have to make an effort to make his sponsors and his friends happy at least for one day. They all will probably impose a fast rhythm so the entrance to Warner Bros. Park will be spectacular.

Consigue su segunda victoria en la Vuelta

Corría el 20 de septiembre de 1997 cuando José Vicente, 'Chente', García Acosta conseguía su primera y, hasta hoy, única victoria en la Vuelta a España. En aquella ocasión se trataba de una jornada con comienzo en la localidad de Oviedo y llegada en el Alto del Naranco. Era todavía en aquellos tiempos en los que no existía L'Angliru. O por lo menos no en términos ciclistas, que es de imaginar que el coloso asturiano estaría allí, esperando al pelotón.

Cinco años después y con una victoria de etapa en el Tour de Francia en el palmarés, el pupilo de Eusebio Unzue ha vuelto a conseguir la victoria en una etapa de la Vuelta a España. Y lo ha hecho a lo grande. Donde Vandenbroucke se hizo leyenda y después de atacar en el Puerto de Serranillos donde Hinault destrozó a sus rivales y sentenció aquella ronda de 1983. Cuando todavía se disputaba en el frío mes de abril.

'Chente' García Acosta ha sabido jugar sus cartas y, como ayer hiciera Santi Blanco, sacó provecho de un lejano ataque y, a base de fuerza, ha podido brindar la cuarta victoria a su equipo en esta Vuelta a España tras las conseguidas por Lastras en dos ocasiones y Blanco en la jornada de ayer.

Aitor González ha sacado también provecho de esta etapa al conseguir reducir en cuatro segundos la ventaja que le separaba de Roberto Heras y la ha situado en 1:08 de cara a esa CRI final en el Bernabéu.

Hay ciclistas que por su entrega y su sacrificio se merecen un premio. Hay ciclistas que se dejan la piel en la carretera a la hora de trabajar. Tal vez por ello, Chente García Acosta festejó como un juvenil su victoria en Avila. El mejor que nadie sabe lo que hay que luchar en una Vuelta para que el equipo salga adelante, para que el patrocinador esté contento y para que al final llegue la recompensa de la felicitación. El de Tafalla le dio ayer la cuarta victoria de etapa al ibanesto.com. Fue uno de los nueve protagonistas de la jornada, pero el que mayor premio recibió.

El triunfo de José Vicente García Acosta es parte de la historia de una etapa que comenzó en Béjar y finalizó junto a la muralla de Avila. La otra la escribió Aitor González, del Kelme-Costa Blanca, que le restó cuatro segundos a Roberto Heras en esa lucha que los dos tienen con el jersey oro de por medio. La rampa empedrada de Avila le proporcionó al de Zumárraga un tiempo que puede ser muy importante en el Bernabéu.

Los 177,8 kilómetros de la decimonovena etapa depararon una doble lucha. El alto de La Hoya fue utilizado por Osa, García Quesada, Rebollo, Caucchioli, García Acosta, Serrano, Atienza, Martín Perdiguero y Lavarinhas para poner tierra y tiempo de por medio. Juntos protagonizaron una fuga que resultó efectiva. Serranillos confirmó que el objetivo final se podía conseguir y fue allí donde Chente debió pensar que ya estaba bien de rodar acompañado.

En Navalmoral el de ibanesto.com tomó la decisión de jugar solo y se fue en busca de Santa Teresa. Arrancó con fuerza y aunque Perdiguero quiso seguir sus pasos, no pudo con su fortaleza. Junto a las murallas abulenses, frente a sus piedras históricas, el guipuzcoano se armó de valor y lanzó en múltiples ocasiones su puño al aire. Fue un acto reflejo propio de un juvenil que tiene treinta años y que ya cuenta en su palmarés una victoria de etapa en la Vuelta (1997) y otra en el Tour (2000).

Roberto Heras encontró el respaldo de su equipo para controlar la carrera, pero en los últimos dos kilómetros sufrió un revés considerable. Aitor González le atacó y le restó en la meta cuatro segundos. Ahora están separados por sólo 1:08. Lo malo para Heras es que el vasco de Alicante demostró estar fuerte y capacitado para mover un gran desarrollo en las calles de Madrid. No obstante, aún quedan dos días. Heras sigue de oro y mandando en la Vuelta.

Las primeras bicicletas de las estrellas  

Conseguir la primera bicicleta no ha sido tarea fácil para los que ahora son auténticas estrellas del pelotón. Cuentan que Joseba Beloki, que quiere ganar esta edición de la Vuelta, obtuvo su bici en una tómbola. Se empeñó en conseguirla y su padre tuvo que comprar tantas papeletas para ello que al final pagó el doble de lo que costaba la bicicleta. Chente García Costa también pasó sus apurillos para conseguir su primera bicicleta. Chente contó con la colaboración de su madre que estando embarazada acompañaba a su marido a ver a los ciclistas. La afición a las bicicletas le llegó al de Tafalla cuando ni siquiera había entrado en este mundo nuestro. El madrileño Dani Clavero como Eleuterio Anguita quería ser futbolista, pero le pegaba tan fuerte al balón que se hizo daño en el dedo gordo de un pié. Los médicos le dijeron que se dedicara a otro deporte y su abuelo le agenció una bicicleta de carrera. Todos los ciclistas profesionales, los que estarán en la Vuelta y los que no, tienen una pequeña historia que está ligada a su primera bicicleta.

20ª Etapa - Avila-Warner Bros. Park (141.2 kilómetros)  

Los velocistas que hayan superado esta Vuelta tendrán una nueva oportunidad para buscar un gran sprint. Los ciclistas se encontrarán con una de las aficiones más importantes que tiene el ciclismo en la actualidad y que reside en Fuenlabrada. La etapa es corta y sobre un terreno muy favorable. Los locales querrán destacar ante su público. Lo lógico es que un mar de personas marque el camino que conduce hasta el parque Warner. Los corredores se encontrarán con el Alto de la Paramera y el del Rey, los dos de tercera. Pero el espectáculo estará entre Móstoles, Fuenlabrada y San Martín de la Vega. Todo Madrid podrá estar en esta jornada que será un gran premio para los que han conseguido superar todas las etapas. Los equipos de los líderes no podrán permitirse ningún descuido y los que no brillaron tendrán que luchar para darle una alegría a sus patrocinadores y amigos. Lo normal es que los que mantengan velocistas en la prueba sean los encargados de llevar al grupo a un ritmo intenso, para que en el Parque siga el espectáculo.
