65th Tour de Romandie - Stage 3
"VINO" Takes Photo finish over Cherel in Neuchâtel - Pavel defends his maillot Jaune with two stages remaining

Alexandre Vinokourov of Astana won the sprint of 80 riders at the finish in Neuchâtel leading Ag2r's Mikael Cherel and Tony Martin (HTC-Highroad) to the line taking his second win this season. Vino caught Cherel on the line with the judges having to look at the finish photos to make a ruling on the winner.

SKY sprinter Ben 'Swifty' Swift led Oscar Freire of Rabobank to the line claiming 4th and fifth.

The race came down to a sprint after Chris Anker Sorensen of Saxo Bank-Sungard and his three break mates were caught in the final 17 kilometers with  Ignatas Konovalovas (Movistar) caught with 10 to go and Sorensen finally swept up in the final 7 kilometers.

The peloton was split on the climbs today with Chris Sutton leading the laughing group to the finish 15 minutes later.

Race leader Pavel Brutt (Katusha finished in the group of 80 in 21rst place in the same time retaining his yellow jersey with a 34 second gap on Vinokourov who moved up to second place after the bonuses were applied. Lampre-ISD's Damiano Cunego dropped one place to 3rd on the G.C. 38 seconds off the pace.

Cadel Evans (BMC) dropped to 4th at 42 seconds... Macotegue Verdugo (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Evans team mate Steve Morabito follow in 5th and sixth.

Pavel Brutt will likely spend one more day in yellow while riding tomorrow's time trial of 20.1 kilometers from Aubonne to  Signal-de-Bougy. Brutt is a capable time trialist, yet he faces G.C. rivals Cadel Evans (BMC) and Alexander Vinokourov both hungry to take the yellow jersey off the Russian shoulders.

With 20 riders within a minute we should have a new arrangement of the top 20 riders by tomorrow afternoon. David Millar (Garnin) and Marco Pinotti (HTC) will be looking for the stage win and to move up on the rankings and there are plenty of talented riders who have the same goal: David Zabriskie, Denis Menchov, Richie Porte (Saxo Bank), Tony Martin just to name a few. Stage 4 Time Trial Start List and Times

Kudos go out to Garmin's  Peter Stetina and Andrew Talansky who have moved into 1 & 2 in the Best Young Riders rankings. Talansky had a tough prologue

Dario Cioni (SKY) will wear the green jersey of points leader. Lampre's Ukrainian climber Oleksandr Kvachuk continues to wear the pink jersey of top climber with a six point lead over Pavel Brutt and  Branislau Samoilau (Movistar).

Stage 3 Profile

Stage 3: Thierrens - Ville de Neuchâtel  165.7 km
147 rriders started in Thierrens under cloudy skies with the sun peeking through at times. Our first attacker was once again  Saxo Bank's Chris Anker Sorensen. Denied by the peloton after several early attacks yesterday Sorensen's initiative paid off opening up a gap in the first kilometers. The Dane was soon joined by Ignatas Konovalovas (Movistar),  Alexandr Kuschynski (Katusha) and Jerome Cousin (EuropCar). The quartet opened a gap of 40 seconds in short order and by the end of the first hour had a gap of 4:10 as they started the 46th kilometer with 120 km to the finish in Neuchâtel.

The quartet worked well together by 50 km they opened the gap to 4:50 which ticked off a more focused chase from Katusha with the gap dropping below 4 minutes as they approached Neuchâtel after 95 kilometers for the final circuits and led with 3:35 as they passed the finish line with Rabobank leading the chase.

Neo-Pro, Jerome Cousin (EuropCar) and twice pursuit champion of France led the break through the intermediate sprint followed by Ignatas Konovalovas (4 time ITT champion of Lithuania) and current road champion of Byelorussia Alexandr Kuschynski and Chris Anker Sorensen with 52 km to go.

Rick Flens (Rabobank), led the peloton through at 2 minutes and 45 seconds. A counter attack of three went off the front but had no success.

Sorensen led over the Cat.1 Enges taking the max points followed by Konovalovas and Kuschinsky. Jerome Cousin was dropped on the climb but rejoined on the descent. Rabobank's Steven Kruisjwijk took the final points as he led the chase over the summit at 1:55 as the entered the final 39 kilometers.

Chris Sorensen led over the summit alone on the Cat.2 Lignières  ahving dropped companions: Konovalovas and Kuschinsky. Cousins also struggled only to be caught on the climb with 16 km to go. Behind it was Euskaltels Ahmets Txurruka and Leopard-Trek's Linus Gerdemann leading the charge of the lead chase group at 1:15.

Behind the peloton split on the climb as the sprinters and weary went off the back.

Sorensen attacked on the descent, rolling through the intermediate sprint, where Konovalovas second chasing at 14 seconds and the peloton at 40 seconds with 10 km to go.  SKY's Dario Cioni attacked picking up the final points on offer - just enough to take the lead in and green jersey of points leader.

A counter attack by Vacansoleil's Lieuwe Westra finally caught Chris Anker Sorensen only 7 km from the finish. Next to attack was Tony Martin (HTC)... But the talented young German rider was caught by peloton led by Alexandre Vinokuorv and Ag2r's Mikael Cherel with Martin holding on for third.
