Movistar's Faria Da Costa and team mate David Lopez filled out the top 5 in
the same time. (the first 27 riders finished 2 seconds behind Cunego.)
The Elite group formed on the descent of the Category 1 Le Gibloux with
Leopard-Trek's Linus Gerdemann attacking the descent with only 16 km to go. Race
leader Pavel Brutt came over the summit a minute after the group but with the
help of team mate Vladimir Karpets was able to limit his loss of time to 1:20 to
keep his yellow jersey.
Pavel Brutt (Katusha) leads Damiano Cunego by 38 seconds and Cadel Evans and
Alexandre Vinokourov in in 3rd and fourth at 42 seconds.
Euskaltel's Marco Verdugo moved up to 5th on the G.C. with BMC's Steve
Morabito jumping up to sixth at 50 seconds.
This is Damiano Cunego's second victory of the season having won the
Giro
dell'Apennino on the 14th of this month.
Stage Winner Damiano Cunego...
: "I'm really happy with this victory that has finally arrived! I knew I was
feeling good after how I felt on the stage yesterday. I have to thank my
teammates who did a fantastic job, especially Spilak who was close until the
final closing kilometers helping me fight the attacks of my opponents. "
Tomorrow’s stage from Thierrens to Neuchâtel starts off gently as the field
covers 113 kilometres of rolling hills on the road to finish town
Neuchâtel. The finishing circuit where the peloton will confront a long Cat. 1
climb as they ride into Enges. This climb is followed by a category two climb to
Lignières before a quick descent with a flat 13 kilometre run-up to the finish.

Evans & Morabito Move Up
The former world road champion had his sprint suddenly cut short as he tried to
pass four riders moving much slower on the uphill finish. Damiano Cunego
(Lampre-ISD) took the win while Evans was second.
Cadel Evans on the finish...
"I had to back off and brake a bit in the last corner because the Ag2r La
Mondiale guy (Mikael Cherel) was coming left. I tried to anticipate the sprint
because I knew Cunego was coming fast."
Pavel Brutt (Katusha) kept his lead, with Evans at 42 seconds and Steve
Morabito in sixth (at 50 seconds).

Rafael Majka And Chris Anker Sørensen On The Move In Romandie
Saxo Bank-SunGard's Polish rider, Rafael Majka impressed on today's second stage
of Tour de Romandie as he finished among the first group of 27 riders to cross
the finish line in Romont. Teammate, Chris Anker Sørensen had been trying to
sneak away from the field within the first part of the stage but he simply
couldn't make it.
Sports director, Bradley McGee was impressed by his
riders...
“It was another tough tough day where Chris Anker (Sørensen) was doing
everything to escape but he wasn't allowed but it's so good to witness him
showing the right attitude and eagerness to attack. Besides, our new rider,
Rafael (Majka) demonstrated great form as he finished in the front group on the
uphill sprint finish while we wanted to save Mørkøv's (Michal) and Noval's
(Benjamin) strength for later. We'll keep on chasing the breakaway's from now on
and we will set Richie (Porte) up for Saturday's time trial,”

Stage 2 Profile
Stage 2: Romont - Romont 171.8 km
Today's stage started two riders short with Rabobank's Tom Leezer and Liquigas'
Simone Ponzi non starters so we had 149 riders off at the gun.
Attacks were the rule of the day, as well as bad luck in making a break
stick... After thirty km Tom Stansnijder (Leopard) and Chris Anker
Sorensen looked to be off to a good start gaining 22 seconds, but als 10 km
later they were back in the pack proving no more successful than the others
today.

After 55 km, an attack led by Quick Step's Kevin Seeldrayers took a strong
group that included, Alan Perez (Euskaltel), Vladimir Gusev (Katusha) and Pierre
Rolland (EuropCar)... but the peloton nixed the brave lads effort. Anothe attack
of seven riders met the same stiff resistance as the riders experienced a slight
drizzle.
After 92 kilometers the peloton finally relented as they approached the first
climb of the day the Cat. 2 Esmonts... Christophe Kern (EruropCar) launched the
break taking 30 seconds and was joined by Maxime Bouet gaining 1:40 on the
peloton. The pair were caught on the climb with Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel-Euskdadi)
leading over the summit followed by, Lampre's Michael Cherel, Pierre Rolland (EuropCar)
and Steven Kruijswijk (rabobank0 and Jesus Harrad of Movistar.
An attack on the descent by Christophe Kern was joined by Bouet who opened a
gap of 40 seconds as the started the second climb of the Cat 2 Dompierre. Kern
led Bouet over the summit with Lampre's Oleksandr Kvachuk, Katusha duo
Alexandr Pliuschin and Mikhail Ignatyev at 2:02.
Bouet and Kern opened a gap of 2:40 on their chasers with 52 kmn to go.
Behind, race leaders Pavel Brutt's Katusha team joined forces with Rabobank as
rain poured down on the peloton and by the 131 km marker with 40 km to go the
duo closed down to just under two minutes.
The gap was down to 30 seconds as the peloton crossed the Rossens dam
on Lake Gruyère, behind riders suffered on the climb. Kern took the points
sprint in Rossems (134 km) followed by Bouet, and Katusha's Kuchinsky as the gap
went up to 1:10 with 27 km to go.
The gap went under a minute with 25 km and by the 20 km to go marker the two
outriders were caught as the peloton raced toward the final climb of the Gibloux.
Tony Martin (HTC) and Sylvester Szmyd (Liquigas) used the opportunity attacking
as Kern and Bouet were taken. It was a good effort but they succumbed
after 8 km with 17 to go.
Yellow Jersey, Pavel Brutt took up a position in the middle of the pack on
the climb as Krueziger, Cunego and Spilak and Vinokourov set an ever faster pace
as the lead group was reduced to 28 riders with Pavel sliding off the back of
the group.
Roman Kreuziger (Astana) led over the summit followed by Macel Wyss (Geox),
Vinokourov and Damiano Cunego... Brutt followed at 53 seconds with Vladimir
Karpets waiting to help his team leader chase the leaders.
Gerdemann (Sky) attacked on the descent with Vinokourov, Szmyd, Roman
Kreuziger, Damiano Cunego, Simon Spilak setting the pace. The Brutt group
was adrift by a minute.
With 9 km to go Thomas Rohregger attacked but was caught by Vino and Cunego
who controlled the front of the group.
Diario Cioni (Sky) attacked with 5 km to go, Barmin's David Milar countered
followed by Rui Costa (Movistar) and Michael Cherel Ag2r la Mondiale.... but it
was David Millar taking the reins in a blistering attack with 3 km to go. The
Brit held out but was joined by Cherel, Costa and Cioni as he rode under the 1
km flag.

with Cadel Evans leading with 100 meters to go, but the former world champion
was caught as he neared the finish and passed by Cunego who claimed the win with
a wide margin.
