65th Tour de Romandie - Prologue
Young Guns rule the day in the opening 2011 Romandie prologue in Martigny... Jonathan Castroviejo Opens his Pro-World Tour account

Euskaltel-Euskadi's youngster Jon Castroviejo stopped the clock on a twisting technical parcours in the prologue today besting USA's 21 year old phenom Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing) by 27 hundredths of a second. Aussie Leigh Howard (HTC-Highroad) claimed third only .73 of a  second off the pace of the 23 year old Spaniard who will turn 24 tomorrow.

After the close show of our 3 young podium toppers Goffroy Lequatre of RadioShack was only 1.95 seconds back for fourth with time trial specialist David Millar (Garmin-Cervélo) fifth at 2.1.

Castraviejo leads a tightly packed peloton for remaining 5 stages over the next  six days; but all 155 riders are within a 1:02 minutes with young Andrew Talansky of Garmin-Cervélo temporarily carrying the red lanterne today.

For Castraviejo it is his first pro level WorldTour victory, though he isn't the Getxo cyclists first win having won 3 victories in 2009 while riding for the Euskaltel's development team, Orbea Continental, but this afternoon has given a new qualitative leap in his development as a cyclist winning against the top pros.  Euskaltel Euskadi added the third win of the season, second in the World Tour.

 Jonathan stated he was happy,
"It was very nice win and I'm very very happy. In addition, tomorrow is my birthday, so it's been an amazing gift, we will have a double celebration. To this day came in the time trials to
do our best to rank among the best. After what happened this afternoon, my mentality has changed, now I can go out and win. I've always been very good at this discipline, but from there to win a prologue like the Tour de Romandie is a major leap. Today we got the win and changed my vision to face future challenges in this discipline. "

And Jonathan said it wasn't that easy...

"When I went to the exit ramp I was thrown another computer and I got very tense. It was an accident that spurred me to give even a little more, I left a little tense. Fortunately, I had my references from Gorka Verdugo. He did the eleventh fastest time and his references were very valid and very important in the final outcome. It was perfect for a time trial specialist, had a complicated curve, but which was won on a straight finish.  I gave everything and it came out great. Now I'll enjoy the win with my team mates."

Tomorrow's first stage will take the riders into the Swiss alps, through Chateau d'Oex to Gstaad and the Pillon pass (1,546 metres) before arriving for the uphill finish in Leysin (1,318 metres) after 170 kilometers.

BMC Racing Team
Phinney Runner-Up In Romandie Prologue

Taylor Phinney piloted his BMC timemachine TT01 to a runner-up finish Tuesday in the Tour de Romandie prologue, less than a half-second off the winning time. On a technical, three-kilometer course, the BMC Racing Team U.S. national time trial champion's time (3:40.69) was only bettered by the 3:40.42 by Jonathan Castroviejo (Euskaltel-Euskadi). Phinney will wear the points jersey for Stage 1.

Taylor Phinney...
"There were probably places where I could make up some time, but at the end of the day, it's just so crazy with everything just flying at you," Phinney said. "The cobbled sections actually kind of frightened me before the race, but when I was on them, I just went full-tilt into it and it ended up being pretty good." Cadel Evans, the 2006 Tour de Romandie winner, finished 25th.

Saxo Bank-SunGard
Saxo Bank-SunGard's highest hope in the overall classification is last year's winner of the time trial in the race, Richie Porte who finished the course 15th best:

”The course was very technical which favors the riders able to gear up fast after the turns and bends and Richie is much better when he gets to just pound away on a flat stretch. Because of this, I'm happy about today's result. There's a longer time trial Saturday which is a lot more up Richie's alley and I hope he gets to show what he came for”, says Saxo Bank-SunGard sports director, Bradley McGee.

And Saxo Bank-SunGard's Michael Mørkøv is content after the time trial:
”In the light of my shoulder injury and a week off the bike, I did pretty well today despite the fact that I principally feel bad about finishing outside the first twenty riders on a time trial. But my form is really coming along, I've recovered from the injury and I'm excited about helping Richie (Porte) and Chris (Anker Sørensen) to some satisfying results in the race where both have decent chances of a top result,” says Saxo Bank-SunGard Dane, Michael Mørkøv.

Jonathan gets his kisses from the misses and his first yellow jersey as a race leader.
