Museo de Jamon: Vuelta Stage 13

Ham-Gazers of the Day
  • Pietro Caucchioli (Alessio). When off the front with a group of climbers on a flat section of the course, he just sat on and waited for a group with sprinters to catch them. Then he worked like a madman in a four-man break and ended up dragging two sprinters to the line with him. I'm not exactly Johan Bruyneel, but I know a terrible decision when I see one. Caucchioli was ham-gazing at the wrong time, and should have busted his hams when he was alone with the sprinters.
  • Everybody else but the Kelmes and the Breakaways. Nobody worked today but Kelme and the breakaway riders. They just hung out in the Museo de Jamon, looking around. Boooooorrrrrriiiiiiinnnnnnggg. They must be thinking about Angliru.
Golden Hams of the Day
  • Giovanni Lombardi (Acqua e Sapone). He won a stage in the Giro d'Italia this year on a similar breakaway on similar terrain. Without Cipo around, he made the most his chance to ride for himself and scored the 4th Acqua e Sapone victory of the Vuelta. He hammered in the breakaway, did a lot of the pacemaking, and looked cooked at the end. But he dug deep and smoked everybody else on the line.
  • Team Coast. They took over the lead in the team competition by 37" over Kelme-Costa Blanca. The winner of the team competition gets an automatic invite to all of next year's grand tours, so winning the competition will ensure that the Coasties won't get dissed by Jean Marie Leblanc again in 2003. With Casero pretty much out of the GC running, look for the Coasties to bury themselves in pursuit of the team competition while the Kelmes are destracted by the defense of their GC men.
  • Kelme-Costa Blanca. So they lost their lead in the team competition. Big deal. They have the top two men on GC, and they did a good job of setting the pace and keeping their big men out of the wind today. If they can ride reasonably again tomorrow, they should have enough left to guide Oscar or Aitor to victory in Madrid.
