Lombardi Achieves his First Stage Win

Always escorting Mario Cipollini. This has been his main role in this Vuelta a España ...so far. This time he got the stage win. This stage has had a weird ending; it seems that Caucchioli has made all the Italian riders who were riding ahead angry.

The stage started fast, as it is being usual in this edition of Vuelta a España and during the first kilometres, there were continuous attempts to break. Then a group of 16 men was formed ahead and they were able to gain enough metres so as not to be bridged up in the whole day. The rhythm they imposed was, once again, very fast; they reached the finish line 20 minutes before the predicted timetable.

There were several breakaways from that group of 16 during the last stretch of the route, but, finally, only six men bet on the final victory. Giovanni Lombardi was the fastest and most clever and achieved his stage win quite easily.

Giovanni Lombardi has been living in Madrid for three years with his girlfriend. One day he had just decided to change his whole and life and move to Spain. He, who is a sprinter, lives in Madrid and trains in the mountain range of Madrid. But then he goes to his own country and works for Cipollini. Now, he is one of the best riders in the world and that is why he is taking part in Vuelta a España; thanks to him Cipollini won three stages and that is why he became the winner today near Sardinero beach surrounded by Italian riders.

The thirteenth stage of Vuelta a España covered the way between Burgos and Santander; this route had a dangerous point, as well as quite good stretches that allowed the attempts to break away from the calm in the group. The descent from Portillo de la Sía was quite tense but caused no problems at all and the Italian riders took advantage of it.

They jusy wanted to get to the finish line in a small group and they got it. All along the way, there were numerous attempts to break away but only six riders got the round of applause in the streets of Santander that were crowded with people.

If we place Oscar Laguna in the group of six, it is easy to understand that the triumph was not for him, as he was escorted by Lombardi, Bramati, Bossoni, Velo and Caucchioli: too many good Italian riders for just one Spanish one. However, the Relax-Fuenlabrada rider tried as hard as he could and then Caucchioli´s decisions resolved the race.

There were no doubts during the home stretch. They did not look back at all; thanks to this behaviour, Lombardi was escorted to the finish line.

Lombardi knew that, under those circumstances, he was going to be the winner and rounded the day off. He admitted that this triumph is really important for his professional career because now he is working for Cipollini.

Kelme-Costa Blanca did not have problems controlling the advantage of the riders in the break and therefore, Oscar Sevilla is leader overall once again and Aitor González second position. We must not forget the Angliru Sunday.

14th Stage - Santander - Gijón (190.2 kilometres)  

Figures tell us that arriving in Asturias means high speed. This time the route is bit different and there is a long flat area. Those riders who are not forced to fight in the following stage will not be quiet at all, so this stage will be long and tense. The irregular ground will favor the breakaways and the last stretch is much more complicated as the climbs to Alto de Buenos Aires and El Gobernador are not easy at all. Last edition of Vuelta a España arrived in Gijón as well but coming from León and that time the triumph was for Erik Zabel. It has been said that the ones who control the race in the streets of Gijón are the brothers González de Galdeano, so the riders have a reference now. Gijón was a cycling reference with the mythical rider López Carril and now with Chechu Rubiera.

Lombardi Consigue Su Primera Etapa

El lanzador habitual del 'Rey León' ha conseguido hoy una merecidísima victoria en la Vuelta a España. Tras un extraño final de jornada en el que Pietro Caucchioli ha enfadado más o menos a todos los corredores que rodaban en el grupo delantero.

La etapa comenzó movida, como todas las de esta Vuelta a España, y los ataques en los primeros kilómetros se sucedieron uno a otro. Finalmente se formó un grupo de 16 unidades que consiguió abrir el hueco suficiente como para que el pelotón no lo volviese a alcanzar en lo que quedaba de etapa. El ritmo que imprimieron fue, de nuevo, muy alto y de hecho se llegaría a la línea de llegada de Santander con unos 20 minutos de adelanto sobre el horario previsto por la organización.

De ese grupo de 16 se formaron varias fugas durante la parte final de la jornada, pero al final fueron seis los hombres que se jugaron la victoria final. Giovanni Lombardi fue el más listo y rápido de ese sexteto y se impuso a sus compañeros de fuga sin demasiadas complicaciones.

Giovanni Lombardi lleva más de tres años viviendo en Madrid con su novia Alicia. Un buen día decidió cambiar los parámetros de su vida y se trasladó a España. El, que es un sprinter, vive en Madrid y se entrena por la sierra. Pero luego se marcha a su país y trabaja para Mario Cipollini. En estos momentos es el mejor lanzador del ciclismo internacional, por ello está en la Vuelta, por ello Cipollini ganó tres etapas y por esa razón junto a la playa de El Sardinero se impuso hoy en una fuga netamente italiana.

El viaje que la Vuelta realizó entre Burgos y Santander, en la decimotercera etapa, tenía un punto peligroso y buenos tramos de carretera para intentar romper la paz del grupo. En el Portillo de la Sía el peligro se superó sin grandes altercados. El descenso fue tenso, pero no fue noticia. Simplemente se pasó y de ello también se beneficiaron los italianos.

Estaban empeñados en llegar dentro de un grupo reducido y lo consiguieron. A lo largo del recorrido, como siempre, hubo muchos intentos, pero al final seis corredores se llevaron los mejores aplausos en las calles de una Santander repleta de público.

Si ponemos en el sexteto a Oscar Laguna, se puede entender que la victoria no fuera para el español, ya que a su lado iban Lombardi, Bramati, Bossoni, Velo y Caucchioli, demasiados leones para una sola presa. Aunque el muchacho del Relax-Fuenlabrada lo intentó, las decisiones de Pietro Caucchioli dejaron la carrera en manos del más veloz del grupo.

No hubo ni una sola duda en el tramo final de la etapa. En ningún momento volvieron la mirada. Gracias a esta actitud, Lombardi fue llevado en una silla de oro hasta la línea blanca donde se encuentran los jueces y los cronómetros.
Lombardi sabía que en esas condiciones él era el ganador y completó la jornada sin ningún problema. El mismo reconocía que este triunfo es muy importante para su carrera porque ahora está al servicio de Cipollini.

El equipo Kelme-Costa Blanca no tuvo problemas para controlar los tiempos de los fugados y por ello Oscar Sevilla sigue de líder y Aitor González en segunda posición a un segundo. Y el Angliru llega el domingo.

14ª Etapa - Santander-Gijón (190,2 kilómetros)  

Los números indican que siempre que se entra en Asturias se hace a mucha velocidad. En esta ocasión el recorrido se presenta muy llano en casi sus tres cuartas partes. Los que no tengan que luchar en la siguiente jornada no querrán ningún tipo de tranquilidad, de ahí que la jornada sea larga y posiblemente intensa. El terreno ondulado es muy apropiado para que salten los que prefieren correr sin compañía. El tramo final es mucho más complicado, ya que tras superar Colunga, aparecen las rampas del alto de Buenos Aires y El Gobernador, que marcan el camino hacia Gijón, tras superar el Infanzón. En la pasada edición de la Vuelta se llegó también a Gijón en una etapa había salido en León y en la que se impuso el alemán Erik Zabel. Se ha dicho que los dominadores de las calles de Gijón eran los hermanos González de Galdeano, por lo que los corredores pueden tener una referencia a la hora de marcar al hombre. Gijón fue referencia ciclista con el mítico López Carril y ahora lo es con Chechu Rubiera.
