World Cup Cyclocross - Kalmthout: Elite Women & Men
Young Tom Meeusen takes first World Cup win in his career holding off Nys and Pauwels for the win. Katie Compton continues dominance with third World Cup win of the season. Vos and Nash second and third.

Telenet-Fidea’s Tom Meeusen took his first career World Cup victory in Kalmthout today. The young Belgian outsprinted Sven Nys (Landboukrediet) in a sprint finish. Kevin Pauwels finished third. Francis Mourey, Niels Albert, Bart Aernouts, Bart Wellens, Radomir Simunek, Diether Vanthourenhout and Martin Zlamalik rounded off the top 10. World Champion Zdenek Stybar was still absent as he is still recovering from tendinitis of the knee. Niels Albert maintains the overall lead in the World Cup.

On the snowy course France’s Francis Mourey and Steve Chainel had a strong start. Chainel almost crashed into a tree while trying to follow his compatriot. World Cup leader Niels Albert took the initiative to chase down Mourey. Albert and Mourey continued with Sven Nys, Tom Meeusen, Bart Aernouts and Kevin Pauwels following.

In front all riders did their part of the work and tried to break clear but it was Pauwels who created the biggest gap. Nys bridged up followed by Mourey and Meeusen. Albert and Aernouts had to drop off. Four riders turned into the final lap together battling for the win; Nys, Pauwels, Mourey and Meeusen. Nys kept the pace high in order to tire his rivals. Nys started the sprint from far but it was Meeusen who took the win. Pauwels finished in third followed by Mourey, Albert and Aernouts. Wellens finished in seventh, Simunek in eight, Dieter Vanthourenhout in ninth and Martin Zlamalik in tenth.

Jonathan Page was the top American in 28th with Ryan Trebon just behind in 32nd. Sean Babcok (53rd), Brian Matter (58th), Mark Lalonde (59th) and Ryan Knapp (63th) were the other Americans finishing the race.

Compton takes third World Cup win of the season in Kalmthout
USA National Champion Katie Compton has won the World Cup cyclo-cross in Kalmthout, Belgium. The Planet Bike rider soloed to an impressive win on the snowy and icy course to win with half a minute over World Champion Marianne Vos and Luna rider Katerina Nash. Sanne van Paassen, Sanne Cant, Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, Hanka Kupfernagel, Pavla Havlikova, Sophie de Boer and Arenda Grimberg rounded off the top ten. World Cup leader Daphny van den Brand wasn’t able to start due to illness and lost her leader’s jersey to compatriot Sanne van Paassen.

British National Champion Helen Wyman had the fastest start but wasn’t able to fight for the top positions due to some bad luck. From the first lap Sanne van Paassen, Katerina Nash, Sanne Cant and Hanka Kupfernagel broke clear from the field. Seven-times USA National Champion Katherine Compton had a slow start but joined the four rider break in the second of five laps. World Champion Marianne Vos had a bad start position due to a lack of UCI points but was on a real fire and quickly gained lots of positions.

Halfway through the race Compton left her compatriots behind and soloed to the win. The battle for second was a fight between Van Paassen, Nash and the impressing Vos. The latter one was the faster over Nash to take second.
