1450: The live broadcast of the race on RAI TV is going to start in a few minutes ... even more frequent updates since then ...
1445: Five hours of racing - The average speed is quite high (42,6 km/h), and the leaders have a current lead of 3'10" on the bunch.
1440: The leaders enter LOANO (Km. 211, 76 to go) while the chasers have cut the gap to 3'18"
1435: 3'33" - That's the current advantage of the seven-man break on the chasing peloton.
1425: The leaders are now entering BORGIO VEREZZI (km. 206, 81 to go) while the gap on the peloton is 3'48"
1405: While in the city of Savona, Lampre's Marco Serpellini gives up in his attempt to chase down the leaders: he's currently 1'35" down !
1355: After four hours of racing, the average speed was about 41 km/H. See you later ...
1350: The riders are now along the Ligurian coast, in Albissola Marina (km. 174, 113 km. to go). In the final part of the descent Hvastija has dropped Serpellini and bridged to the leaders. So now, after 4 hours of racing, there are 7 men in the break, with Serpellini 32" down and the (not so chasing) peloton far behind: the gap beteween the leaders and the bunch has increased to 4'32"
1335: 26-year-old Bodrogi (Mapei) just joined the five leaders. The now leading sextet has a 56" advantage on Hvastija and Serpellini, while the peloton is 1'30" down
1330: The situation while on the descent into Sassello: the five leaders have a slim 18-second lead on Bodrogi, 1'08" on Hvastija (Slo - Alessio) and Serpellini (ta - Lampre) who manged to get clear of the peloton, and 1'22" on the rest of the bunch.
1324: The leaders are at the top of the Bric Berton, the halfway point of the race. The first to get to the top of the climb was Olano, followed by Andrle, Schmidt, Duma and Inigo Cuesta. We are now in the Liguria region of Italy, with about 135 km. to go.
1315: The peloton is climbing the Bric Berton - Five riders in the lead as another Spaniard (Inigo Cuesta riding for Cofidis) just joined the leaders. The five breakaway guys have a 32-second lead on Mapei's Laszlo Bodrogi (Hungary) and still 1' on the chasing bunch.
1300: Olano's teammate René Andrle (Cze - Once) joins the three leaders. The quartet has a 1-minute lead on the Saeco-led peloton.
1247: An attack, at last !!! Three riders managed to get clear after 125 kms. or fracin: they are Abraham Olano (Spa - Once), Thorsten Schmidt (Ger - Gerolsteiner) and Vladimir Duma (Ukr - Panaria), who gain some hundred metres on the peloton. Olano wins the Intermediate Sprint in Cassinelle.
1200: The peloton just crossed the town of Pozzolo Formigaro and is heading southward now. 92 km. gone and 185 to go. We are near to the birthplace of one of the greatest (perhaps the greatest) cycling legends of all times: Fausto Coppi.
1155 Fantasy Games: just like in the previous games (Tour, Vuelta, World Championships) a special (but only Virtual, sorry) award will be given to the virtual team with the best, funniest and most original name ...
1150: Two hours of racing. 81.600 kms. are gone, some than 205 to go ... av. speed 40.800 km/h. Still waiting for something worthy of mention to come ... See you later ...
1125: The race is now in the Piedmont region of Italy (province of Alessandria). Still strong crosswinds, while the pace of the peloton is now a little slower. Just to remind you: another race is scheduled to start, at about 1130 AM, in the Ligurian town of Varazze: the 4th edition of the "PRIMAVERA ROSA" ("PINK SPRING"), that's also the third leg of the UCI WOMEN'S ROAD WORLD CUP. The race should finish in Sanremo's Via Roma (same finish line as MSR of course) about three hours later after 118 kms. of racing, with a route encompassing the most difficult ascents featuring MSR too: Capo Cervo, Capo Berta, Cipressa and the Poggio. The winner so f the three previous editions of the ladies were:
1999. Sara Felloni (Ita)
2000. Diana Ziliute (Ltu)
2001. Susanne Ljungskog (Swe)
While both previous legs of the Current Women's UCI WORLD CUP, disputed in Australia and NZ in the first part of, were won by Saturn's Petra Rossner (Germany). More updates to come later ...
1105:Km. 58 in VOGHERA (229 to go). The Peloton, heading for the Piemonte region of Italy, is still regrouped. Now there's a quite annoying croossind as the riders are going westward. Nothing important has happened so far. The average speed has a litle improved, the bunch is riding at approx. 40km/h. More to come later ...
1025: The riders are just outside the city of PAVIA, at about the Km. 32 Mark. Still 255 kilometres to go. PELOTON REGROUPED. None of "Suicidal Breakaway attempts" which marked some of the previous editions of this race has happened so far. Perhaps some riders will try to ride clear of the bunch and build an important gap such to get some TV exposure when the livve broadcast begins, but that will come later. The race is marked by an heavy heavy (even more than usual) wind, often a tailwind in this first part of the race going southward. Things could even go worse in the coastal part of the race, usually even more windy than the planes of Lombardia and Piemonte.
PS: I've taken some pictures of the peloton in the Pavia area. Hope I may be able to post them soon.
0940: The 287-KM. MILAN-SAN REMO race gets underway in Via della Chiesa Rossa in Milano. 196 Riders belonging to 25 different trade teams take the start in the opening contest of the 2002 UCI World Cup. Among the nonstarters is Teams Coast's sprinter Fabrizio Guidi.
FANTASY GAME: I'm still Checking your virtual teams. Most of them have been regularly accepted. But not all of them. Some teams weren't set up according to the rules, while some participants sent 2 different squads, and of course only the first one was admitted into the game. Several (predictable) last minute changes are going to affect many of your virtual teams. Consquently several replacements are likely to happen. No probs for participants including a proper number of substitutes in their line-ups. As for the ones who selected eventual nonstarters WITHOUT adding reserves, they'll play with a lesser number of riders.
See you in a while for further updates of the race ...
