Trentin wins in Sierra Nevada - Zarrabeitia new leader overall

Fast stage, the fifth in Vuelta 2002. The 198 kilometres between
El Ejido and the ski resort of Sierra Nevada, with two mountain passes, has been
characterized by the breakaway of seven men. This breakaway was, finally,
bridged up by the Saeco men.
The most exciting part of this fifth stage was the final stretch
of the ascent to Sierra Nevada in which the favourite riders, except Sevilla,
were just watching and controlling the others and expecting what can happen
tomorrow. Guido Trentin took advantage of the work done by García Casas who was
so naive and did not try to win the stage.
The favourites are more or less in the same positions overall,
except Sevilla who, among the group of favourites, was the one who moved several
positions up. Mikel Zarrabeitia is wearing the Gold Jersey for the first time
instead of Joseba Beloki who has arrived in the finish line 1:38 after the
winner and now is 10 overall, 1:28 after Zarrabeitia and 36 after Sevilla.

La Vuelta changed to the tops of Sierra Nevada. That was
something we were expecting. We changed from the sea to the sky and the
strengths were intact. Therefore, the Gold Jersey left his owner and found a new
one. Mikel Zarrabeitia was the one who took more advantage of the hard work done
by Sevilla. The rider from the Basque Country became the new leader overall and
that shows his good physical form.
The fifth stage started with a tribute to the victims who died
in New York a year ago due to the terrorist attacks and ended with a battle but
a professional one. It was a very complete day in which the Italian rider
Trentin stepped on the podium to get the congratulations, though, maybe it
should have been García Casas to get on the podium today.
There were almost continuous attempts to break away all day.
From the first kilometre we all knew that quietness was not going to be the main
feature of the day. Berges, Clain, García Acosta, Oscar Laguna, Victor Hugo Peña
and Díaz Justo did their best to win the stage but had to give in in front of
the strongest riders and the hardness of the climb.
Before reaching the first climbs, the doctors had to work hard.
Once, they had to assist Beloki who hit his knee against his bike. Then they had
to assist Roberto Laiseka, who fell down and had a serious cut on his lip and
right side of his face and had to be taken to hospital in an ambulance.
When all the riders were aware of their own position in the
race, the fight started. The first ones to start the attempts to break away were
Luis Pérez and López de Munai. They opened the way for the rest and US Postal
placed Christian Vandevelde at the head of the race so as to protect Roberto
Heras when Jose Luis Rubiera failed.
There were multiple attempts to break during the last 10
kilometres, but the battle was probably over when Manolo Beltrán wanted to be
winner. His attitude even surprised his leader Angel Casero. This moment was
seized by Oscar Sevilla, who acted as a real leader.
Oscar Sevilla was the exception in the group of favourites.
Beloki was there all the time, while Zarrabeitia and Azevedo did their task.
García Casas and Trentin were the only ones who could defend their advantage and
at the end the Italian rider became the winner. All of them did their best.

6th Stage - Granada - Sierra de La Pandera (153.1 kilometres)
The second mountainous stage of this edition 57 of Vuelta a
España offers us an ideal stage, on the one hand we will discover Granada, a
place where so many cycling stories has been written and on the other hand the
audience will be the witness of the climb to Sierra de la Pandera, a special
category pass (1,840 metres high). The last stretch of the route will be
exciting, because after crossing the streets of Jaén, the riders will have to
face Los Villares mountain pass, a second category climb and then finally the 13
kilometres that lead to Sierra de la Pandera.
Brilliant riders such as Beltrán and Sevilla have already said
that "the last kilometres are become an eternity". Many people have named La
Pandera as the southern Angliru. The first 600 metres are very tough, they are
similar to La Huesera in Los Lagos. Those who want to win this edition of Vuelta
a España will have to measure their strength because the climb, apart from being
beautiful is hard. We will face a new special category climb in La Vuelta; the
first rider to reach the top will go down in history.

Trenti gana en Sierra Nevada - Zarrabeitia es el nuevo líder
Etapa movida la quinta de esta 57ª edición de la Vuelta a España.
Los 198 kilómetros que han unido El Ejido y la estación de esquí de Sierra
Nevada. Con dos puertos puntuables antes de iniciar el ascenso al largo alto
granadino, la jornada ha estado marcada por la fuga de un grupo de siete hombres
que el trabajo de los hombres de Saeco se encargó de echar abajo.
La parte más interesante de esta quinta etapa ha sido,
evidentemente, la ascensión final a Sierra Nevada en la que los favoritos -excepción
hecha de Sevilla, que decidió pasar al ataque- se dedicaron a marcarse y
estudiarse en espera de lo que pueda acontecer el día de mañana en el alto de La
Pandera.
Guido Trenti se aprovechó del trabajo de un Félix García Casas
muy fuerte, pero muy inocente a la vez para hacerse con la victoria en la cima
de Sierra Nevada. Como decimos, entre los favoritos no se han marcado grandes
diferencias excepción hecha de Oscar Sevilla que del grupo de los aspirantes a
la victoria final es el que más reforzado ha salido de esta primera llegada en
alto.
Mikel Zarrabeitia se ha vestido con el jersey oro en sustitución
de su compañero de equipo Joseba Beloki que ha llegado a meta a 1:38 del ganador
y ahora es décimo en la general a 1:28 de Zarrabeitia y a 36 segundos de Sevilla.

En las cumbres de Sierra Nevada la Vuelta pegó su primer cambio.
Era algo esperado. Se pasaba del mar al cielo y las fuerzas permanecían intactas.
Los motores estaban rodados, pero sin presión. Por ello, el jersey oro cambió de
dueño y los más famosos tuvieron problemas para atacar y también para defenderse.
Mikel Zarrabeitia terminó siendo el más beneficiado de la actitud guerrera de
Oscar Sevilla. El vasco se convirtió en el líder de la Vuelta, lo que evidencia
su gran estado de forma.
La quinta etapa comenzó con un acto en memoria de los 2.801
muertos del atentado terrorista de las Torres Gemelas de Nueva York y finalizó
con un batalla deportiva de muy alto nivel. Se pasó de la comprensión y la
tristeza a la entrega en el trabajo profesional. Fue una jornada muy completa
que vio como el italiano Guido Trentin subía al podio a recibir las flores del
vencedor, aunque a lo mejor quién más se lo merecía era Félix García Casas.
Durante toda la jornada se sucedieron los ataques. Nadie estaba
conforme con su suerte y desde el primer kilómetro se comprobó que la
tranquilidad no iba a marcar la jornada. Berges, Clain, García Acosta, Oscar
Laguna, Víctor Hugo Peña y Díaz Justo se empeñaron en ganar sin compañía, pero
tuvieron que rendirse ante la presión de los más fuertes y la dureza de Sierra
Nevada.
Antes de llegar a las primeras rampas, los doctores de la
carrera, Irigoyen y Grande, tuvieron que emplearse a fondo en varias ocasiones.
En una de ellas atendieron a Joseba Beloki, que se golpeó con el manillar de su
bicicleta. Su rodilla se resintió y los doctores consiguieron calmarle el dolor.
El que no pudo seguir en carrera fue Roberto Laiseka, que se golpeó contra el
asfalto y tuvo que ser retirado en camilla hacia un hospital, con una gran
herida en el rostro.
Cuando cada corredor aceptó el papel que le tocaba jugar en la
carrera, empezaron a producirse los ataques. Los primeros en encender la mecha
de la "dinamita" fueron Luis Pérez y López de Munai. A base de mucho esfuerzo
abrieron el camino y obligaron al equipo US Postal a colocar a Christian
Vandevelde al frente del grupo para defender a Roberto Heras, ante el
desfallecimiento de José Luis Rubiera.
Los tirones se sucedieron a lo largo de los últimos diez
kilómetros, pero posiblemente la batalla se consolidó en el momento en que
Manolo Beltrán intentó jugar a ganador. Incluso, su actitud sorprendió a su jefe
Angel Casero. El momento fue muy bien aprovechado por Oscar Sevilla, que enseñó
los dientes y actuó como verdadero jefe de filas.
Oscar Sevilla rompió el grupo de favoritos en el que no estaba
ya su compañero Santiago Botero. Beloki también tensó la cuerda, mientras
Zarrabeitia y Azevedo cumplían con su trabajo. Félix García Casas y Guido
Trentin fueron los únicos que lograron defender la ventaja. Aunque el madrileño
realizó todo el desgaste, al final Trentin se quedó con la etapa.
Zarrabeitia se pegó a Sevilla y Beloki consiguió que se
desgranara su grupo, de tal forma que Angel Casero y Roberto Heras cedieron unos
segundos. Gilberto Simoni estuvo siempre entre los mejores y todos se mostraron
generosos en el esfuerzo.

6ª Etapa - Granada-Sierra de La Pandera (153,1 kilómetros)
La segunda jornada de alta montaña de la Vuelta nos ofrece una
etapa ideal, un primer encuentro con Granada, donde el ciclismo ha escrito
muchísimas historias, y un segundo choque con los olivos de Jaén y con una
subida de categoría especial a la Sierra de La Pandera, de 1.840 metros de
altitud. El tramo final de esta etapa será muy emocionante, ya que tras cruzar
las calles de Jaén, los corredores se encontrarán con el Puerto de Los Villares,
de segunda, y con los trece kilómetros finales que conducen a La Pandera.
Corredores importantes como Beltrán o Sevilla ya han comentado
que "los últimos kilómetros se van a hacer eternos". La cumbre ha sido una base
militar de telecomunicaciones y sus cumbres sirven para que pasten las cabras y
la ovejas. Muchos denominan a La Pandera como el Angliru del sur. Los ciclistas
dicen que para subir sus rampas del 15 por ciento deben emplear un 39x25. Los
primeros seiscientos metros son muy duros, se asemejan a la Huesera de los
Lagos. Los que quieran ganar la Vuelta tendrán que marcarse de forma muy
estrecha y regular sus fuerzas, ya que la subida, además de hermosa es exigente.
Estamos ante un puerto de categoría especial que debuta. El primero en llegar a
la cumbre hará historia.
